PurposeArgo Workflows is an open-source, container-native engine for orchestrating parallel jobs on Kubernetes.Azure Logic Apps is a fully managed integration platform for automating workflows, integrating data, and orchestrating processes across cloud and on-premises environments.
Security controlsThe security guidance recommends enabling transport-layer security and an authentication mode for Argo Server, then configuring its role and role binding with appropriate permissions.Documentation lists Microsoft Entra OAuth, SAS tokens, inbound IP restrictions, API Management and managed identities as available access controls.
Workflow designWorkflows can be modeled as task sequences or directed acyclic graphs, with each step defined as a container.A drag-and-drop visual designer, prebuilt templates, and organizational templates support workflow authoring and reuse across an Azure tenant.

Argo Workflows

Argo Workflows is a free, open-source engine for orchestrating container-based jobs on Kubernetes. Workflows can be arranged as sequential steps or as tasks linked in a directed acyclic graph, with each step running in a container. The project lists machine learning pipelines, data and batch processing, infrastructure automation, and CI/CD as use cases. Controls include loops, conditionals, retries, timeouts, suspension and resumption, cancellation, and limits on parallel work. Cron scheduling, workflow archiving, a UI for viewing and managing runs, and Prometheus metrics are included. Artifact support covers S3, Artifactory, Alibaba Cloud OSS, Azure Blob Storage, HTTP, Git, GCS, raw artifacts, and plugins. The server provides REST API support over HTTP and gRPC, with client libraries for Java, Go, Python, and TypeScript. Argo Workflows is self-hosted and can run on any Kubernetes cluster. Its listed plan costs nothing, and the official pages list no paid plans or usage limits. Administrators should configure transport security, authentication, roles, and permissions; workflow pods run as root by default unless their security context is set.

Azure Logic Apps

Azure Logic Apps is a managed integration platform for automating workflows, connecting data, and coordinating processes across cloud and on-premises environments. A visual designer, prebuilt templates, and organizational templates support building and reusing workflows. The service offers more than 1,400 prebuilt connectors, and users can create their own. Workflows can include Python, .NET, PowerShell, or JavaScript, and can be built, tested, debugged, and run locally in Visual Studio Code. An Automated Test Framework supports mocked actions and workflow assertions. Logic Apps can also orchestrate AI agents, including multi-agent handoffs and nested hierarchies, and has Azure OpenAI and Azure AI Search connectors. B2B and EDI operations support large payloads and formats such as EDIFACT, X12, AS2, RosettaNet, and SWIFT. Consumption workflows run in multi-tenant Azure, while Standard is single-tenant; Hybrid runs workflows on customer-managed infrastructure. Consumption meters triggers, actions, and connector executions; Standard uses hosting-plan pricing, with possible Azure Storage transaction charges for stateful workflows. The listed plans have no prices. Azure says users can try Azure free for up to 30 days.
