Overview

Art Explora Academy is a free art-history learning platform built around short courses, quizzes and a media library. It suits curious learners who want a structured introduction without paying for lessons. Its strongest draw is the mix of brief courses and reference media; the catch is that all content requires a free account, and sharing or downloading the certificate requires a donation.

The platform offers 11 thematic courses, each under an hour, plus videos, articles and podcasts. Progress tracking and guided projects add structure, although the format of those projects is not described. The Impressionist Adventure course was made with the Musée d’Orsay. A broader category roundup is in Art Learning Apps.

Key features

Courses and quizzes

Each course ends with a 12-question quiz, with 10 correct answers needed to validate it. That checkpoint makes the short lessons more than passive reading or viewing, but learners pursuing the certificate must pass all 11 quizzes.

Certificate and media library

Completing all courses leads to a certificate validated by Sorbonne University. The credential is not fully free to obtain in shareable or downloadable form: that requires a donation of at least €5. The media library of videos, articles and podcasts gives learners material to explore beyond the course sequence, though the platform remains focused on art history rather than art-making instruction.

Account, privacy and support

A free account is required for all content, so casual visitors cannot simply browse the full library without signing up. Art Explora says it will not sell, rent, exchange or give away personal information; its privacy policy says site data are hosted and processed exclusively in France and that SSL secures data exchanged with the site. Support is reachable at academy@artexplora.org.

Pricing

Free — 0.00 USD per free. The plan includes 11 thematic e-learning courses and the art-history library and articles. It is the clear fit for learners who want the full course path without subscription cost. There is no free trial because the service is free, and no paid course tier is described. The main qualification is the certificate: all 11 quizzes must be passed, and downloading or sharing it requires a donation of at least €5.

Platforms

Art Explora Academy is listed for web, Android and iOS, and the maker announces an Academy mobile app. Offline access is listed, which is useful for learners who want to study without a live connection. The available platform mix covers browser and mobile use, though no desktop app is indicated.

Who it's for

This is a good fit for people who want a compact, low-cost route into art history, especially those who value quizzes and a certificate path. It is less suitable for learners seeking detailed art-making lessons or a credential they can download and share without making a donation. The free-account requirement also makes it less convenient for one-off browsing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Eleven courses under an hour each make the subject approachable in short sessions.
Pros: Quizzes require 10 of 12 correct answers, giving learners a concrete way to validate each course.
Pros: Videos, articles and podcasts broaden the learning materials beyond the course lessons.
Pros: The courses and library are free, and the certificate is validated by Sorbonne University after all courses are completed.
Cons: A free account is needed to access all content, adding a sign-up step even for casual exploration.
Cons: Certificate download or sharing requires a donation of at least €5, so the credential is not completely cost-free in its portable form.
Cons: The focus is art history, not practical drawing or painting instruction.

Alternatives

Choose Sketchar instead if you want a freemium drawing app with built-in templates and a basic canvas across Android, iOS and web. ArtWorkout is a better alternative for mobile learners seeking daily practice lessons, with free daily energy and one-time purchases also offered. For a web-based drawing curriculum, Drawspace provides more than 50 free lessons and adds three free lessons each month after registration; its Member plan costs 9.50 USD per month for a larger lesson allotment.

ShadowDraw is another alternative. Sketch a Day is worth considering for mobile sketching. Animation Mentor offers a paid web-based course option. Creature Art Teacher is another freemium alternative, with a streaming membership at 9.99 USD per month. DigitalPainting.School offers free web courses and introductory chapters alongside paid courses.

Verdict

Art Explora Academy is the right choice for learners who want a free, structured introduction to art history with short lessons, quizzes and supporting media.
