Overview

AskSia solves problems in math, science, engineering, business, and computer science, returning step-by-step explanations rather than just an answer. Students can type, paste, photograph, or speak a question, and enter mathematical notation in LaTeX. That range is useful when a problem is cumbersome to transcribe, while the worked steps make the service more appropriate for learning than answer-checking alone.

After a solve, students can request alternate methods, practice problems, and flashcards. AskSia also offers more than 184 topic-specific solvers, making it a broad study companion for students who want to explore a subject beyond one question. The service says it is an independent company, unaffiliated with or endorsed by any university.

Key features

Flexible input and guided solutions

Photo input, document uploads, spoken questions, pasted text, and LaTeX give students several ways to bring a problem to the solver. Step-by-step solutions, hints, and guided mode support following the reasoning, although the free plan’s daily solve cap can limit how often students use that help.

Practice and export

Alternate methods, practice problems, and flashcards extend a solve into review. The web app can export to PDF, DOCX, Notion, and Google Docs, which suits students who want to keep their work in a document or study workspace.

Classroom extension and data controls

The Chrome extension supports Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Moodle, Everytime, CyberCampus, Echo360, and Panopto. It is read-only, does not write to the LMS, and does not share the user’s LMS password with AskSia. Synced course materials are encrypted with TLS 1.3 in transit and AES-256 at rest, are not used to train AI, and can be deleted. Those safeguards matter to students using course materials, though the extension’s read-only design is the right fit for reference and study rather than changing LMS content.

Pricing

AskSia uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes daily problem solves, step-by-step solutions, and photo input; document uploads and hints or guided mode are also supported. No paid plan is described, making AskSia’s free offering the clear starting point rather than a basis for comparing upgrade terms.

Platforms

AskSia is available on the web, Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows, as well as through a Chrome extension. That coverage suits students moving between a phone, computer, and browser-based coursework. The extension’s LMS support is specific to the platforms named above.

Who it's for

AskSia is aimed at high school students and students in their first two university years who want explanations and practice across multiple subjects. Its many input methods are useful for mixed formats, and its exports and LMS extension help fit study into existing workflows. The service agreement prohibits cheating and plagiarism and recommends against use during tests or exams, so it is not the right choice for completing assessed work dishonestly.

Pros and cons

Pro: Typed, pasted, photographed, spoken, and LaTeX input reduce friction for problems that are awkward to enter as plain text.
Pro: Alternate methods, practice problems, flashcards, hints, and guided mode support learning beyond the initial solution.
Pro: The extension is read-only and does not share LMS passwords; synced materials are encrypted, excluded from AI training, and deletable.
Con: The academic-integrity terms rule out use for cheating or during tests and exams, so AskSia is strictly a study aid.

Alternatives

Choose Photomath if you want a mobile-focused math solver: its free plan offers step-by-step explanations, while custom visual aids and extra “how” and “why” tips are excluded; its annual Plus plan is 69.99 USD per year.

Mathway is another option for Android, iOS, web, and Windows, with free access to its solver and calculators; choose it if that calculator access is the priority, bearing in mind that step-by-step solutions are available and an optional subscription unlocks the rest.

ShowYourWork may suit students who value a fixed, transparent monthly generation allowance: its free plan resets monthly at three generations, with referral generations possible, while explanations and practice problems remain free.

Solvely is another freemium option, with Android, iOS, web, and extension access.

Cymath is a narrower alternative for math: its free plan provides step-by-step math solutions, while Cymath Plus costs 5.00 USD per month and adds ad-free use and detailed sub-steps on most problems.

Sovi.AI is another freemium solver for Android, iOS, and web.

StudyX is worth considering if you want AI notes, flashcards, quizzes, live transcription, and AI chat alongside homework help.

QuestionAI offers broad platform coverage matching AskSia’s, including extension and desktop support; its yearly subscription is 4.90 USD per year, billed at $4.90 USD/month, with unlimited problem solving and image uploads.

Browse AI Homework Helpers for more solver options, or AI Summarizers if summarization is the main need.

Verdict

AskSia is a strong fit for high school and early university students who need worked explanations across subjects and want practice and review tools after each solve. Its broad input support and study follow-ups are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a known daily free allowance or a tool for anything beyond legitimate study.
