Overview

Atlas compares a database’s current schema with a desired schema expressed in HCL, SQL, or an ORM format, then generates and executes a migration plan. It also supports schema diffs, rollback, migration validation, safety checks, schema and migration testing, CI/CD automation, and drift detection. That breadth makes it useful across a schema’s lifecycle, rather than only for creating migration files.

Atlas is open-core: its core engine is Apache 2.0 licensed, while advanced capabilities are proprietary. The open version supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, TiDB, and LibSQL; Pro adds other drivers, including SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, and Databricks. This makes the open edition a practical starting point for common databases, but teams using some commercial or analytical databases may need Pro.

Integrations include Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, Bitbucket Pipelines, Azure DevOps, and a Go SDK. See Database Migration Tools and Database Testing Tools for related categories.

Key features

Declarative planning and migration safety

Working from a desired schema lets teams compare intended structure with the database’s current state and produce a migration plan, rather than treating each change as an isolated file. Linting, validation, safety checks, and migration testing help teams assess changes before execution. These controls matter most in CI/CD workflows, where a faulty schema change can affect deployments; they do not remove the need for teams to review their plans.

Database coverage and registry

The free edition covers six databases, while Pro broadens driver support. Pro’s Atlas Registry manages up to 500 root objects; columns, indexes, foreign keys, and comments do not count toward that ceiling. The cap is generous for many schemas, though teams with larger registries should treat it as a plan constraint.

Operations and security

Atlas Cloud is described as using multi-availability-zone replication, automated failover, and daily encrypted backups, with 99.9% uptime. Ariga says it has undergone SOC 2 Type II audits since 2022 and that Atlas handles database information schema and metadata rather than customer database records. Those properties may help security-conscious teams assess the service, but are not a substitute for reviewing their own deployment and data requirements.

Pricing

Atlas is freemium, with a 30-day Pro trial for new users. After the trial, a license is required to continue using Pro.

Atlas Starter: 0.00 USD per free. It offers limited inspection and diffing, limited database support, and support for MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. It suits evaluation or smaller workflows that can stay within those limits, but omits the broader Pro driver set.
Atlas Pro (Team): $9 per developer, per month, plus usage based pricing for CI/CD pipelines and databases. The plan includes 50 CLI seats, 90-day history retention, and up to 500 root objects. CI/CD projects cost $59/month, including 2 target databases; each additional target database is $39/month. This is the fit for teams needing Pro capabilities, but the usage charges mean the per-developer price is not the whole bill.
Atlas Schema Monitoring: $39/month per monitored databases. It includes a schema changelog, ERD and schema docs, column-level data lineage, Security Graph and CVE scanning, drift detection, and alerts. It is aimed at teams that want monitoring and documentation, with spend tied to the number of monitored databases.
Atlas Enterprise: custom pricing, starting from 20 databases. It adds customizable plans, Enterprise SSO, premium support and a custom SLA, air-gapped network deployment, and offline licenses for CI/CD. It targets larger or constrained deployments; the entry threshold makes it a poor fit for smaller teams.

Starter has GitHub and Discord support; Pro gets business-hours support, while Enterprise has a custom SLA. The free plan’s limited inspection, diffing, and database support are the main trade-offs for avoiding a subscription.

Platforms

Atlas supports API, Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployment. That combination accommodates command-line and hosted workflows, as well as teams that need to operate the software in their own environment.

Who it's for

Atlas serves teams from startups to Fortune 500 companies and names financial services, healthcare, cybersecurity, e-commerce, manufacturing, education, government, and cloud vendors among its industries. Its mix of declarative workflows, migration checks, and CI/CD integrations is most compelling for teams coordinating schema changes across environments. A smaller team with only basic database support needs may be better served by Starter; teams that require Pro should budget for pipeline and database usage as well as developer seats.

Pros and cons

Pro: A single workflow can compare desired and current schemas, plan and execute migrations, and validate changes, reducing the need to assemble separate tools for those tasks.
Pro: The open-core engine and free Starter plan give teams a way to begin without a paid license, with common database support included.
Con: Pro’s $9 per-developer monthly price is supplemented by CI/CD and database charges, so total cost depends on usage.
Con: Starter has limited inspection, diffing, and database support; users needing the additional Pro drivers must move to a paid license.
Con: Pro history retention is 90 days and its registry limit is 500 root objects, which may constrain teams with longer audit needs or larger schemas.

Alternatives

Choose Skeema if you want a freemium option whose Community plan includes tables, stored procedures and functions, and 18 linter checks; its Plus plan is $124/month.

Bytebase Enterprise may suit teams looking for a free Community plan capped at 20 users and 10 database instances, or a Pro plan at $20 per month per user.

Consider Redgate SQL Provision when capacity-tier licensing based on production data volume is a better fit; its listed tiers run from 1TB to 100TB.

FluentMigrator is a free, Apache-2.0 licensed framework distributed through NuGet, with provider packages selected separately.

SchemaHero is another free option.

sqldef is another free option.

Liquibase may suit teams considering a freemium tool with a Starter plan covering up to five applications and one database type; onboarding and implementation require a professional services package.

Alembic is an open-source option under the MIT license.

Verdict

Atlas is a strong choice for teams that want declarative schema planning, migration safeguards, and deployment integrations in one tool, with an open-core route to evaluate the basics. Choose it if those capabilities and its supported databases match your workflow; look elsewhere if Starter’s limits are too restrictive or Pro’s usage-based charges make costs hard to predict.
