| Intended users | ATTO describes drive manufacturers, IT professionals maintaining IT ecosystems, and hardware review sites as users of its Windows benchmark. | The documentation describes tests that simulate I/O patterns in database applications and file activity similar to Squid or INN. |
| Purpose | ATTO Disk Benchmark measures storage system performance, including performance in hard drives, solid state drives, and storage systems. | Bonnie++ benchmarks hard drives and file systems by measuring work per second and CPU usage. |

In their own words
ATTO Disk Benchmark
ATTO Disk Benchmark measures read and write performance and I/O throughput for drives and storage systems. It can test hard drives, SSDs, RAID and storage controllers, and host adapters. Storage reached over a network or block connection can be measured through a file system. Tests may run continuously or capture snapshots, with adjustable transfer sizes and queue depths; multiple disks can be tested in one run. ATTO describes its file-system performance tests as non-destructive. Custom test profiles and command-line automation are supported, and results can be saved in BMK, TST or LOG formats or sent to print. Windows and macOS versions are listed: the Windows download page lists v5.00.3, while the macOS page lists v1.01. ATTO identifies drive manufacturers, IT professionals maintaining IT environments, and hardware review sites as users of its Windows benchmark. The utility is free. Technical support is available by email or contact form.
Bonnie++
Bonnie++ is a free, command-line benchmark suite for measuring filesystem and disk I/O performance on Linux. It exercises sequential input and output, rewrites, random seeks, and file operations including creation, stat, and deletion of many small files. The project describes these workloads as useful for investigating I/O bottlenecks in I/O-intensive applications, including database work, and for simulating file activity associated with Squid or INN. Bonnie++ can test more than 2 GB of storage on a 32-bit machine. Its -D option enables direct I/O for bulk tests, while -b calls fsync after each write and syncs the directory after file creation or deletion. Semaphore support can synchronize multiple instances. Results can be emitted as plain text or CSV, with companion tools to convert CSV into HTML or formatted plain text. The project is licensed under GPL version 2.0, and the repository includes source code and Debian, RPM, and Sun-related packaging files. Its documentation warns against running the benchmark on live production machines because it can affect services and consume disk space or inodes.
