Overview

DWG is AutoCAD’s primary format, with DXF support and tools including PDF underlays, parametric constraints, and batch printing. The seven specialized toolsets cover architecture, mechanical, MEP, electrical, plant, mapping, and raster design, giving users in those fields more tailored workflows than a general drafting package alone.

Teams can share DWG files, work in parallel, and add multi-user markups. Standalone subscriptions include Forma Data Management Essentials. AI capabilities include markup assistance, block replacement suggestions, and contextual productivity tips. These additions support drawing coordination and routine work, while the core case for AutoCAD remains its 2D and 3D design scope and industry-specific toolsets.

Subscriptions include web and mobile access, and the application supports offline work. Each subscription belongs to one named user, who can install it on up to three devices but use it on only one at a time. That suits an individual moving between devices, not a team sharing one subscription simultaneously. Support options and resources are available online 24x7, and subscriptions cover the current version plus three previous versions.

Key features

2D and 3D drafting and modeling: Useful when a workflow spans precise drawings and three-dimensional design; less compelling if you need only a narrowly defined 2D task.
Specialized toolsets: Architecture, mechanical, MEP, electrical, plant, mapping, and raster design coverage makes AutoCAD relevant across several disciplines.
Collaboration around DWG: Shared files, parallel work, and multi-user markups help teams coordinate drawing changes.
Cross-device access: Desktop platforms plus web and mobile access give subscribers flexibility, with the one-device-at-a-time rule limiting concurrent use.

Pricing

AutoCAD is paid software, with a 15-day free trial and renewable one-year education access for eligible students and educators. Education access is a useful route for qualifying learners, but it is not a general free plan.

Monthly subscription: $260.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for one user. This offers the shortest commitment, but costs more over a year than the annual option.
Annual subscription: $2,095.00 USD per year, paid annually, for one user. It suits users expecting regular use throughout the year.
Three-year subscription: $6,285.00 USD per year, paid annually for a three-year term, for one user. The longer commitment is best reserved for users confident AutoCAD will remain part of their work.

Annual and multi-year subscriptions have a 30-day return period; monthly subscriptions have a 15-day return period. The one-user assignment applies across plans, so none is a shared-seat option.

Platforms

AutoCAD runs on Windows and macOS, with web access and mobile apps for iOS, Android, and Windows. Windows mobile support is included among its supported platforms. This breadth helps users continue work away from a desktop, while the device-use limit still applies.

Who it's for

AutoCAD is a strong choice for professionals and teams whose work requires precise 2D and 3D design, one of its seven specialized toolsets, or collaboration around DWG files. It is also practical for an individual who needs desktop capability alongside web and mobile access. Readers needing only occasional drafting, a shared concurrent seat, or a free general-purpose plan should compare other options.

Pros and cons

Pro: Seven industry toolsets extend the software beyond general drafting for architecture, mechanical, MEP, electrical, plant, mapping, and raster work.
Pro: Shared DWG files, parallel work, and multi-user markups support coordinated team workflows.
Pro: Web and mobile access are included with every subscription, and offline mode is supported.
Con: A subscription is assigned to one named user and permits use on only one device at a time, limiting shared or simultaneous use.
Con: The monthly price is $260.00 USD, making the short-commitment option costly for intermittent work.
Con: The 15-day trial is brief for evaluating a substantial design workflow.

Alternatives

For narrower or different needs, compare the 2D CAD Software, Electrical Design Software, Architecture Software, and CAD software lists.

Choose ProfiCAD if you want a freemium option with a free plan and a 30-day full-featured trial without a credit card. MATLAB Grader is a free alternative for users with a MATLAB license under maintenance; LMS integration requires a qualifying academic license. ETAP is another paid option with a free trial and annual or multi-year subscription options.

SOLIDWORKS is a freemium alternative with a listed Design Standard with Cloud Services plan at $2,820.00 USD per year, licensed to one machine. Trimble Viewpoint Vista offers cloud-hosted and on-premises deployments with pricing by contacting sales. Siemens Building X offers yearly application or API subscriptions with quote-based pricing. KiCad is free software under GNU GPL version 3 or greater. PLECS has a fully functional 30-day trial; consider it if that trial is the relevant starting point for your evaluation.

Verdict

Choose AutoCAD if your work depends on precise 2D and 3D design, specialized industry toolsets, or coordinated DWG workflows across desktop and mobile. Its breadth is the main reason to pay for it; the named-user, one-device-at-a-time limit and substantial subscription cost are the reasons to look elsewhere if your needs are narrower, intermittent, or shared across users.
