In their own words
Avaz
Avaz is a picture- and text-based AAC app for people with complex communication needs to express themselves and learn. Its category-based vocabulary is available across three grades of core vocabulary, with a consistent layout and motor patterns. Keyboard prediction can correct spelling mistakes and can be set to show suggestions after a delay. Users can add words, personalize pictures, and change settings through the Settings Wizard. The Activity Dashboard and Communication Adventures offer caregivers activity ideas, strategies, and modeling training. Avaz Analytics presents communication development in graphs and charts for therapists. Dropbox can be linked to back up and sync vocabulary across devices; users can also import or export pages to share with other Avaz users. The app provides speech output and supports touch, switch, and eye-gaze access on iOS and Android, in multiple languages. Avaz also offers FreeSpeech for English grammar practice using picture tiles, and Reader, which supports reading with hints and help for learners including children with dyslexia and first-generation English speakers. Avaz AAC – English costs $149.99, paid once and includes a free 2-week trial.
Otsimo Speech Therapy
Otsimo Speech Therapy is a mobile app intended to help children with pronunciation, speech production, and broader speech and language skills. Its activities span more than 15 categories and 200 exercises covering communication, interaction, turn-taking, and speech. During practice, a child on screen models a sound or word for the user to imitate. Speech and voice recognition with machine learning assesses what the child says and adjusts activities. An optional developmental test can guide a tailored practice path; the maker recommends it for personalization. The app requests camera and microphone access during practice to understand the child’s speech. Otsimo designs its apps for ages 1 to 8 and says children up to age 15 may also use them. The app focuses on articulation, tracks progress, and supports offline access. It is available in English on iOS and Android phones and tablets, not desktop computers. An account can be used on up to three devices when signing in with the same method. The FAQ presents the app as support where therapy is hard to access and says it does not replace care from a speech-language pathologist. Speech therapy games are also available through Alexa apps on Amazon Echo devices.
