Overview

Seam connects applications to IoT devices for access, energy, and monitoring. Its use cases include vacation rentals, hospitality, multifamily housing, gyms and sports, and coworking. Rather than being just a door-management app, it provides infrastructure for integrating devices into other products and workflows. That is a strong fit for teams building their own connected service, but less so for buyers seeking a finished access-control product with no development work.

The platform says it connects to thousands of devices and brands, but catalog inclusion alone is not assurance that a particular integration is supported. Confirm the exact brand and integration before making Seam the basis of an operational rollout.

Key features

Credentials and access rules

The Access Grants API supports PIN codes, mobile keys, key cards, Instant Keys, access schedules, and device events. Membership validation, scheduled access rules, mobile credentials, and multi-location access add useful coverage for operators managing recurring users and access across sites. The range is practical for product teams that need to choose how users enter and when credentials work, while the API-centered approach means teams should expect to build the experience around those capabilities.

Seam's iOS and Android SDKs support mobile keys for Bluetooth and NFC doors within an app. This makes sense for businesses that want access embedded in their own mobile product; it is not the same proposition as adopting a ready-made consumer app.

Events and device operations

Webhooks deliver access and device updates in a common format across connected brands, which can spare developers from handling each brand's event format separately. Users can check device status, group devices by location, troubleshoot remotely, and scale operations. Those capabilities matter most to teams responsible for a device portfolio; they cannot compensate for an unsupported device integration.

Offline systems and web components

Seam Bridge connects on-premises access-control systems and offline devices with Seam, extending the platform beyond devices that are directly online. Seam Components can be integrated into web projects built with frameworks such as React or with plain HTML and CSS, and adapt to desktop and mobile interfaces. This gives teams more than one way to present access functionality, though web components and SDKs still call for implementation work.

Security and support

Seam says it encrypts service data in transit, applies least-privilege system access, and requires personnel to use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication. Its Trust Center provides access to SOC 2 reports and other compliance documents by request. All customers receive email help and help-center access; paid support plans add faster response times and dedicated support, with Premium and Enterprise priced at $20,000/yr and $50,000/yr respectively. Growth support is included at $0/yr.

Pricing

Seam has a free plan and a free trial. The Free plan includes full API access, webhooks, and all supported brands, making it a sensible starting point for evaluation or a small initial integration. Unit Access costs 5.00 USD per month and includes 5 actions/device/day, priority email support, full API access, webhooks, and all supported brands. That daily action cap is the key trade-off for lower-volume use.

High Traffic costs 50.00 USD per month and keeps priority email support, full API access, webhooks, and all supported brands while allowing unlimited actions. It suits workloads that exceed Unit Access's per-device daily limit. Enterprise has custom pricing and offers dedicated Slack, custom contracts, volume pricing starting at 500+ devices, a dedicated support engineer, and no usage limits; it is aimed at larger deployments that need tailored terms and support.

The listed support tiers are separate from those plans: Growth is $0/yr included, Premium is $20,000/yr, and Enterprise is $50,000/yr. The published plan terms do not give a trial length or renewal conditions.

Platforms

Seam supports Android, iOS, web, and API. The mobile SDKs are relevant to teams embedding mobile keys in apps, while the API and web components serve application and browser-based implementations.

Who it's for

Seam is best for developers and businesses in vacation rentals, hospitality, multifamily, gyms and sports, or coworking that need to connect access devices to their own applications and manage activity across locations. It is a weaker choice when a buyer needs a turnkey access product or cannot verify that its specific device integration is supported.

Pros and cons

Pros: One API covers several credential types, schedules, and device events, giving product teams flexibility in how they build access workflows.
Pros: Normalized webhooks and remote device-management tools support operations across connected brands and locations.
Pros: The Free plan includes full API access and webhooks, so teams can evaluate core capabilities before choosing a paid tier.
Cons: A catalog brand may not have a supported integration, so buyers must confirm device compatibility before committing.
Cons: Unit Access is capped at 5 actions/device/day; higher-activity use requires the 50.00 USD per month High Traffic plan or custom-priced Enterprise.
Cons: The SDK and component model is for teams building their own experience, not buyers looking for a complete access app without development.

Alternatives

For gym operators comparing access tools, Gym Access Control Software is a useful category starting point. Sentry Interactive is another paid option with Android, iOS, web, and API support. re:membr Access Control is a paid alternative for Android, iOS, and web, while Beckon Access offers a free plan and a paid Club management Add-on at 99.00 EUR per month for memberships, contracts, user accounting, SEPA direct debit, and online payments.

GymAxess has no free plan and charges 10.00 EUR per month per door license or 50.00 EUR per month per location license, making its licensing basis worth comparing with Seam's action-based tiers. KisiFit has no free plan and starts at 99.00 USD per month for a location-based Base plan with up to two locations and one door. Avigilon Alta Access offers paid Basic and Premium plans with API and webhooks, alerts, reports, and support features, at custom pricing. Brivo Security Suite is a paid alternative with monthly subscriptions priced through a reseller. Kisi has no free plan and starts at 99.00 USD per month for its One Security Platform, with discounts for annual contracts.

Verdict

Choose Seam if you are building a device-connected service and want a flexible API for credentials, events, and multi-location operations, with a free plan for getting started. Look elsewhere if you need a turnkey access-control product or cannot confirm support for the specific brands your deployment depends on.
