Overview

Permission-based newsletters, automated message series, opt-in forms and blog-post notifications cover the core email work. AWeber also supports ecommerce pages, web push notifications and selling products, services, subscriptions and payment plans, with sales tracking and purchase tagging. That breadth is useful for small businesses running both marketing and sales through email; businesses needing only occasional newsletters may find the wider toolkit unnecessary.

Campaigns can be built with drag-and-drop, HTML or plain-text editors, with more than 700 responsive HTML templates. AI tools assist with newsletter and email drafts, subject lines, signup forms and landing pages. AWeber connects to more than 750 tools, including Shopify, WordPress, PayPal, Facebook and Zapier; its REST API and webhooks let developers manage subscribers, campaigns, analytics and lists. Free account migration handled by AWeber can ease a move from another service.

Key features

Campaigns and automation

Email automation, audience segmentation, A/B testing and landing pages give AWeber more range than a broadcast-only tool. Its automations are largely prebuilt but customizable, which helps teams start with a ready-made workflow instead of building one from scratch. The trade-off is plan-based restrictions: Free includes one automation, Lite allows three, and Plus removes the automation limit.

Ecommerce and integrations

Stripe payments can be collected in more than 100 currencies. Purchase tagging and sales tracking connect ecommerce activity to email marketing, making AWeber a plausible fit for businesses selling directly to their audience. More than 750 integrations provide broad connections; Zapier or Pabbly can extend those to thousands of applications.

Support and account controls

Phone, live chat and email support are available 24/7, with priority support on Plus. AWeber says it encrypts data in transit and at rest, monitors systems continuously, maintains backups, assesses risk and uses DDoS mitigation. It also says it does not sell customer, subscriber, advocate or visitor information.

Pricing

AWeber has a free plan and paid plans billed monthly or annually, depending on the tier. Check the billing terms carefully: the 14-day trial starts a paid subscription automatically when it ends.

AWeber Free: $0.00 USD for lifetime access, up to 500 subscribers and 3,000 emails monthly. It includes one list profile, one workflow automation and one landing page, with no credit card required. The email cap and single-workflow limit suit a small list or a first campaign, but free-plan emails carry AWeber branding.
Lite: $12.49 USD per month, billed annually. It supports unlimited subscribers and monthly sends up to 10 times the subscriber count, with one email list, three landing pages, three automations, three users and one custom segment. It is the lower-cost paid option for a small team that can work within one list and limited segmentation; paid plans remove the free-tier branding.
Plus: $19.99 USD per month, billed annually. It includes unlimited subscribers and monthly sends up to 12 times the subscriber count, plus unlimited lists, landing pages, automations, custom segments and users. The additional $7.50 per month over Lite buys substantial room for teams that need multiple lists, workflows or collaborators.
Unlimited: $899.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It offers unlimited subscribers and up to 15 sends per subscriber monthly, with full feature access. This is aimed at large-scale sending rather than a small business testing email marketing.
Hold Package: $4.99 USD per month to pause an account temporarily while preserving its data. It is an account-preservation option, not a campaign plan.
Done For You: $20.00 USD per month, billed annually, plus a $79 setup fee shown (regularly $599). It includes Plus, setup completed in seven days and 30 days of unlimited edits, for businesses that want help getting started.

Platforms

AWeber supports web and API access. Dedicated mobile apps have been retired, so phone and tablet users must use its browser-based mobile website. That is a notable limitation for people who want a native app for managing campaigns away from a computer.

Who it's for

AWeber is best suited to small businesses and entrepreneurs that want newsletters, automated sequences, landing pages and ecommerce tools together, with a path from a capped free tier to higher-volume paid plans. Businesses that need only a few campaigns may be better served by the free plan if its branding and limits are acceptable. Teams needing multiple lists, workflows or segments should compare Lite's caps with Plus before committing.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 750 integrations, ecommerce support and email tools cover a broad small-business marketing workflow in one service.
Pros: Prebuilt customizable automations and AI-assisted drafting and page creation can reduce setup work.
Pros: Free account migration and 24/7 support offer practical help when moving or resolving issues.
Cons: Free-plan emails include AWeber branding, and the free tier stops at 500 subscribers and 3,000 monthly emails.
Cons: Lite restricts users to one list, three automations and one custom segment, so teams needing more structure must upgrade to Plus.
Cons: The trial converts automatically after 14 days, and mobile access is browser-based rather than through dedicated apps.

Alternatives

Consider GetResponse if native Android and iOS apps matter alongside web and API access; it also has a free plan and trial. Choose Twilio Segment if its free plan's visitor and Reverse ETL allowances or its 700-plus integrations better suit the job. DirectIQ is worth comparing for its pay-as-you-go option, which has no monthly commitment and allows unlimited contacts.

Mailchimp offers a free plan with 250 contacts, 500 emails per month, one audience and one seat, a tighter starting allowance than AWeber's free subscriber and monthly email caps. Mailjet may suit users prioritizing a free monthly send allowance: its free plan includes 6,000 emails per month, 200 per day and 1,000 contacts. Twilio SendGrid is an API-only alternative whose free trial lasts 60 days but is limited to 100 emails per day and 100 contacts.

ActiveCampaign is an option for readers who want to compare a paid service with a free trial and no free plan. Direct Mail is a macOS and iOS alternative with a free plan limited to 150 emails per month.

Verdict

AWeber is a solid choice for a small business that wants campaigns, automations, landing pages and ecommerce tools under one roof, backed by extensive integrations and 24/7 support. Its main appeal is that breadth; look elsewhere if native mobile apps are essential, or if the free-tier branding, trial conversion or Lite's limits do not fit your needs.
