Overview

The marketplace brings together more than 3,500 products from over 300 providers, including a catalog of more than 1,000 free data products and custom data products. That breadth gives buyers a substantial pool to search, while free and paid offerings make the actual value and cost depend on the product rather than a single marketplace subscription.

Products are delivered as files, APIs, or data sets for Amazon Redshift, Amazon S3, and Amazon Lake Formation; the Lake Formation option is in Preview. This range suits teams with varied AWS pipelines, but buyers should check that a particular product's delivery format matches their intended use.

Key features

AWS data workflows

Data can be exported to Amazon S3 and analyzed with Amazon Athena or Amazon Redshift, or used with Amazon SageMaker, Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, and AWS Lake Formation. Amazon CloudWatch Events can automatically retrieve new data-set revisions into S3, which helps teams keep downstream data current without manually handling every revision. These integrations are a clear advantage for AWS-centered analytics and machine-learning workflows, but offer less benefit when an organization works primarily on another cloud or platform.

Provider terms and access

Providers can offer free or paid subscriptions lasting from 1 to 36 months. Private products and offers can tailor price, duration, payment schedule, agreement, and refund terms, giving buyers and providers room to negotiate beyond public catalog terms. Providers can publish through the AWS Data Exchange console, its API, or the AWS Marketplace Catalog API. Public data in the Open Data on AWS program can be found and used by people with or without an AWS account.

Security and governance

Data is encrypted in transit with SSL/TLS and at rest with server-side encryption. AWS CloudTrail integration lets providers and subscribers audit API calls, and the service has been validated as compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. These controls support governed data exchange, though they do not remove the need to assess each provider's product and terms.

Pricing

AWS Data Exchange is a paid marketplace with free products, not a fixed-price subscription to the whole catalog. Free and open data products are free; these provide access to free catalog products without a product subscription charge. Pay-as-you-go data products have custom pricing, billed for usage during the calendar month at provider-set prices. Subscription-based data products also have custom pricing, with charges billed upfront or on a schedule and provider-set durations.

Sales taxes may apply to paid products, and subscribers may also incur standard Amazon S3 transfer charges and charges for AWS services used to store, process, or analyze data. Those separate costs can materially affect the total cost of a dataset, particularly for buyers who need to move or process substantial amounts of data. The free catalog is a sensible starting point for exploration, but it does not make associated AWS service or transfer charges free.

Platforms

AWS Data Exchange supports web and API access. That fits teams that browse products through a web interface or integrate provider and subscriber workflows programmatically; the supported data formats and AWS integrations make it most useful when those workflows connect to AWS services.

Who it's for

The service is a strong fit for data teams already using AWS who want a broad selection of external datasets, multiple delivery formats, and the option to automate revision retrieval. Buyers who need negotiated subscription terms may also benefit from private offers. It is a weaker fit for organizations that need a predictable all-in price, or whose data pipelines do not use AWS, because provider-set product prices and separate AWS charges complicate budgeting and reduce the value of the integrations.

Pros and cons

Pros: A catalog of more than 3,500 products from over 300 providers, including over 1,000 free products, gives buyers a broad range to explore.
Pros: Files, APIs, and AWS data-set formats, plus S3 export and integrations with AWS analytics and processing services, support varied AWS workflows.
Pros: Private offers can customize price, term, payment schedule, agreement, and refund terms.
Cons: Provider-set prices and multiple billing approaches mean buyers must evaluate the specific product offer rather than rely on one marketplace price.
Cons: AWS service and data-transfer charges can add to the product cost.
Cons: Lake Formation delivery is in Preview, so buyers who need that format should account for its preview status.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison of marketplace options, see Data Marketplace Software.

DX Network is worth considering for buyers who want to try a marketplace for free; data transactions there use DX Tokens and are pay per datapoint. Snowflake CoCo is another option for buyers comparing data marketplaces, with a free trial and support for API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows.

Advaneo DataMarketplace offers a freemium model and API and web platforms, which may suit buyers seeking an alternative with a free plan. Data Marketplace may be a better fit for buyers who want a defined free allowance: its free plan includes 10 downloads per month and 1,000 API calls per month, while its Starter plan costs 19.00 USD per month and includes 100 downloads and 10,000 API calls per month.

Datarade Marketplace may suit sellers looking for a commission-based entry plan, which includes 3 listings, 3 contact requests, 5 proposals, a $1,000 posting budget, and 3 user seats for free, with a 30% commission. Intertrust Analytics Marketplace is another paid option with a free trial and web or self-hosted platforms.

Informatica Product 360 is an alternative for buyers comparing paid data-management software with API, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms; its pricing depends on data volume, modules, deployment, integrations, and add-ons. Liberbyte Data Exchange is another paid alternative, with Linux, self-hosted, and web platforms.

Verdict

Choose AWS Data Exchange if your team already works in AWS and needs a broad marketplace of third-party data with delivery options that connect to AWS analytics and storage. Its free catalog, revision automation, and negotiable private offers are practical strengths. Look elsewhere if you need a simple, predictable total price or want data workflows centered outside AWS: provider-set terms and additional AWS charges make cost and fit product-specific.
