Overview

Azahar is a free, open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator whose scope extends from game libraries to homebrew debugging and preservation. Its strongest fit is a 3DS owner or developer using desktop or Android; the Android system requirement and the gap between frontend support and a standalone iOS app deserve attention before choosing it.

Azahar carries forward Citra’s legacy through community development. It targets the Nintendo 3DS and aims to make game libraries usable with features such as higher resolutions, modern controllers and save states, rather than simply reproducing the original hardware experience.

Key features

Playback and development

Graphics upscaling, save states and modern-controller support address practical reasons to use an emulator instead of original hardware. They suit players who want more flexibility, while homebrew debugging gives developers a separate reason to consider the project. Research and preservation work broaden its purpose beyond gameplay. Netplay is supported, though its setup and capabilities are not established here, so users who depend on a particular multiplayer workflow should verify that it meets their needs.

The compatibility tracker offers per-game reports, which can help players check a title before relying on it. The FAQ warns that reports may be outdated; treat them as a starting point rather than a promise of compatibility. Azahar says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.

Privacy

The mobile app privacy policy says the app does not obtain information during download or use, requires no registration and shares no data with third parties because it collects none. That is a clear privacy position for Android users. Its security statement is based on the same no-collection claim, not a broader security guarantee.

Pricing

Azahar is free and open source. Its Azahar plan costs 0.00 USD per free and describes a free, open-source 3DS emulator. There is no paid tier or free trial to weigh against that plan, so the decision is about platform fit and compatibility rather than feature or seat limits.

Platforms

Standalone applications are available for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The project is also available through Flathub and the Google Play Store. Android requires version 10.0 or later on a 64-bit device, a meaningful constraint for users with older or 32-bit hardware.

Libretro cores support RetroArch and similar frontends, including on iOS and tvOS. That frontend route should not be confused with a standalone Azahar iOS app: the FAQ says Azahar iOS support is not planned for the foreseeable future and points users toward an iOS build of the original Citra instead. Anyone choosing Azahar specifically for iPhone or iPad should account for that distinction.

Who it's for

Azahar makes the most sense for 3DS owners who want upscaling, save states or modern-controller support on a supported desktop system or qualifying Android device. Homebrew developers, researchers and preservation-minded users may value its non-gaming aims. It is a weaker fit for users who need a standalone iOS app, older Android support or guaranteed compatibility for a particular game.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with no paid tier to unlock the stated emulator purpose.
Pros: Supports both play-oriented features and homebrew debugging, research and preservation.
Pros: Desktop standalone apps, Android distribution and Libretro frontend support offer several ways to use it.
Cons: Android requires 10.0 or later on a 64-bit device, ruling out some older hardware.
Cons: There is no standalone Azahar iOS app planned for the foreseeable future; iOS users must consider a Libretro frontend or another option.
Cons: Compatibility reports may be outdated, so the tracker cannot assure a specific game will work.

Alternatives

Browse Nintendo 3DS emulators or game console emulators if you want to compare options by category. For a broader emulator directory, see emulator software.

Panda3DS is another free, open-source 3DS emulator, with official builds that are not private or sponsor-limited. Consider it if that distinction matters in your choice. RetroArch is a free, open-source project available on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows, and may suit readers looking for a broader frontend route. Play! is another free emulator for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows.

PPSSPP is a free PSP emulator with a freemium model and a separately named Gold plan with no price stated; choose it for PSP rather than 3DS emulation. DuckStation is free on Android, Linux, macOS and Windows, but requires a user-provided BIOS image and legally purchased, dumped games. For Game Boy or Game Boy Advance, VisualBoyAdvance-M is a free, open-source option with Android and desktop builds, while mGBA is a free, open-source Game Boy Advance emulator for Linux, macOS and Windows. bsnes is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Azahar if you want a no-cost, open-source way to use a Nintendo 3DS library on desktop or qualifying Android hardware, or need a project that also serves homebrew and preservation work. Its combination of upscaling, save states and broader development aims is compelling; look elsewhere if you require a standalone iOS app, have an unsupported Android device or need certainty about a particular game’s compatibility.
