Overview

FileZilla Client covers three established transfer protocols across the major desktop operating systems, with no charge for its free plan. That combination makes it a sensible choice for individual users and organizations handling conventional server transfers. It is distinct from FileZilla Server, which is a separate product, and from FileZilla Pro, whose scope extends to cloud services.

The project backs the client with documentation and community resources. That can matter when users need help configuring a connection or diagnosing a failed transfer. The client’s stated protocol coverage remains FTP, FTPS and SFTP; readers seeking cloud-platform connections should look beyond this edition.

Key features

FTP, FTPS and SFTP address a range of common file-transfer setups. For SFTP users, the Wiki includes a guide to key-based authentication, a useful resource for people configuring that access method. Installation instructions cover Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, while tutorials and usage guidance help users get oriented.

The Wiki also covers connection and transfer troubleshooting, FAQs and network configuration. A community forum, general FAQ, support section and contact page provide additional routes to assistance. The project links to source code, nightly builds, translations, version history and an issue tracker as well. This is a strong support and project-resource ecosystem, though it should not be mistaken for additional transfer capabilities.

FileZilla Pro is a separate option for users who need broader service coverage. Its overview includes FTP, SFTP and FTPS plus cloud platforms such as Amazon S3, Google Drive, Microsoft Azure, OneDrive, SharePoint, Backblaze B2, Box and WebDAV. The project also presents an Enterprise Server with FTP, FTPS, SFTP, two-factor authentication and unlimited users; that server offering is separate from FileZilla Client.

Pricing

FileZilla Client is free. The free plan covers FTP, FTPS and SFTP, making it suitable for users whose work stays within those protocols. No free-trial period is offered, and there is no paid price or billing schedule for this client to compare. The project’s separate Pro product is the relevant distinction for cloud services, rather than a stated paid tier of FileZilla Client.

Platforms

The client runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, making it a practical option for mixed desktop environments. Its installation documentation covers those systems, with the Mac instructions identified for Mac OS X.

Who it's for

Choose FileZilla Client if you need a no-cost desktop client for FTP, FTPS or SFTP and want documentation for installation, authentication and troubleshooting. It is also a reasonable fit for organizations supporting users across Linux, macOS and Windows. Look elsewhere if cloud-storage integrations are central, or if you need a server product rather than a client.

Pros and cons

Pros: FTP, FTPS and SFTP are available at no charge, with Linux, macOS and Windows support.
Pros: The Wiki covers installation, key-based SFTP authentication, connection and transfer problems, and network configuration.
Pros: Community, FAQ, support and project resources give users several avenues for guidance and information.
Cons: Its stated coverage centers on FTP-family transfers; readers who need cloud-platform connections should consider FileZilla Pro instead.
Cons: FileZilla Server is separate, so this client is not the product to choose when the requirement is a server.

Verdict

FileZilla Client is a sound choice for users who need free FTP, FTPS or SFTP transfers on Linux, macOS or Windows, especially when setup guidance is valuable. Its main reason to choose it is that straightforward combination of protocol coverage and support resources at no cost. Look elsewhere if cloud integrations or a server product are essential to your workflow.
