Overview

Artists can customize a store, sell digital music and physical merchandise, and reach fans through messaging and automatic notifications. Fans get free accounts with a listening feed, follows, wishlists, playlists and a collection page, plus high-quality downloads of purchases. This joined-up store and listening experience gives buyers a reason to keep returning to artists; sellers, however, give up a portion of every sale.

Bandcamp takes 15% on digital items and 10% on physical goods. The digital fee falls to 10% after $5,000 in sales if the artist maintains at least $5,000 in sales over the past 12 months. That rewards sustained volume, while newer or lower-volume artists should account for the higher digital share in their pricing.

Key features

Stores and subscriptions

The customizable storefront supports digital releases and physical merchandise. Artists can also set monthly or annual subscription prices, with offers ranging from new releases and catalog items to subscriber-only music or merchandise and access to a subscriber community. Subscriptions make Bandcamp useful beyond one-off sales, though the revenue share still matters when deciding what to charge.

Fan listening and playlists

Free fan accounts include playlists, a wishlist, artist following, a music feed and a customizable collection page. The free iOS and Android apps let fans stream purchases, build queues and playlists, and listen offline. Bandcamp Playlists remain in beta, require a logged-in fan account, and restrict sampling of unowned tracks to an artist-set play count, three by default. That makes the feature useful for organizing a collection, but less open-ended for sampling music.

Artist tools and integrations

Bandcamp Pro adds batch uploads, ad-free video hosting, private streams by link, Shopify inventory syncing and uploads up to 2 GB per track. The inventory sync is particularly relevant to artists already selling through Shopify, since it keeps stock levels aligned across both services. Pro also includes Google Analytics integration. A beta Subsonic API lets fans stream and download their collections through clients including Amperfy, Feishin and Submariner.

Bandcamp publishes a privacy policy covering personal information and user data. For site questions, it directs artists, labels and fans to its Help Center; general support messages sent to the press email will not receive a response.

Pricing

Bandcamp uses a freemium model: artists can begin with a free account, while Pro starts at 10.00 USD per month. Label accounts start at 20.00 USD per month. The paid tiers add operational tools and label-specific capabilities rather than removing the sales share.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best fit
Bandcamp Artist account	Free	Customizable direct-to-fan store, messaging and automatic fan notifications, listening parties and live streaming	Artists starting out or selling without needing Pro tools
Pro for Artists	10.00 USD per month	Batch uploads, ad-free video hosting, private streams via links, Shopify inventory integration, and uploads up to 2 GB per track	Artists who need those workflow and integration features
Label Accounts	20.00 USD per month	Free and Pro features for the label account, a free Bandcamp Pro account for each artist on the label, chart reporting and territory licensing	Labels managing multiple artists and needing reporting or licensing tools

The free artist account covers the core storefront and fan communication, but not Pro’s batch uploads, private streams, video hosting or Shopify sync. Labels pay from 20.00 USD per month and gain a free Pro account for each artist on the label, making the tier more relevant to a roster than a solo seller. The 2 GB per-track upload ceiling applies to Pro. Sales fees remain 15% on digital items and 10% on physical goods, with the stated digital-rate reduction tied to both the $5,000 threshold and maintaining that level over 12 months.

Platforms

Bandcamp supports web, iOS and Android. Its API support includes the beta Subsonic route for compatible third-party music clients. The mobile apps extend purchased-music listening with streaming, queues, playlists and offline playback.

Who it's for

Bandcamp is a strong fit for independent artists who want a customizable place to sell music and merchandise while giving fans a persistent collection and mobile listening options. Pro suits artists whose upload, private-stream or Shopify workflows justify 10.00 USD per month. Label Accounts make more sense for organizations managing several artists, especially when chart reporting and territory licensing are useful. Sellers whose priority is minimizing transaction costs or running a broader commerce operation should compare alternatives before committing.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free fan accounts combine purchases, follows, playlists, wishlists and collection pages, supporting continued engagement after a sale.
Pro: Artists can sell both digital music and physical goods, and offer recurring subscriptions with several kinds of subscriber benefits.
Pro: Pro’s Shopify inventory sync addresses a concrete problem for artists maintaining stores on both services.
Con: The 15% digital sales share is substantial for artists below the threshold for the lower rate; even the reduced rate requires sustained $5,000 sales over 12 months.
Con: Useful workflow features such as batch uploads and Shopify syncing require the 10.00 USD per month Pro plan.
Con: Playlist sampling is constrained by login requirements and artist-set limits, with three plays as the default for unowned tracks.

Alternatives

Digital Product Selling Platforms is a useful starting point for comparing services beyond music-focused storefronts.

Sellwire is worth considering for a general file-selling setup: its free plan is limited to one file, while the 9.00 USD per month Solo plan allows up to 10 files with unlimited versions and orders.
Shoprocket may suit a broader store that needs unlimited products, annual sales volume and staff on its 29.00 USD per month Starter plan; Bandcamp is more specifically organized around music and fans.
Gumroad is another option for direct sales or marketplace discovery, with stated transaction charges of 10% + $0.50 for direct sales and 30% for marketplace sales.
SellApp offers a free Standard plan with fees calculated per sale, unlimited resources and products, and a custom domain; consider it for digital storefront needs outside Bandcamp’s artist-fan model.
DPD is a paid alternative for product-file selling, with a 10.00 USD per month plan covering 1GB of product space and 20 products.
Sellix is a free option if avoiding subscription, take-rate and expiry charges is the priority; it supports digital, physical, subscription and license-key products.
SendOwl may fit sellers seeking a paid delivery platform, with its Launch plan at 39.00 USD per month and stated annual order and sales limits.
3DIMLI is another freemium option for web, desktop and mobile platforms.

Verdict

Choose Bandcamp if you are an artist or label that wants storefront sales connected to fan collecting and listening, and can absorb its transaction share. Its clearest advantage is that buyers, purchases and ongoing artist-fan activity live in one music-centered service. Look elsewhere if the sales cut outweighs that relationship, or if your priority is a general-purpose digital commerce platform.
