Overview

Bedrock Viz parses Bedrock world files to produce reports, images, and a browser-based map viewer. The viewer covers 256 Overworld and Nether layers from bedrock to the build limit, giving builders a way to inspect their world in two dimensions without changing editions.

There is a meaningful data risk: running the tool can change world files. Work from a backup copy, not the sole copy of a valued save. If you serve generated maps, take care not to include sensitive files in the served output.

Key features

Layer and map inspection

The viewer includes biome, mob, item, and spawnable-block views, plus chunk boundaries, elevation shading, and distance measurement. These tools make it useful for locating builds, checking terrain, and examining world features across both dimensions. Markers and waypoints are supported, though the 2D view is not a substitute for viewing the world in-game.

When opened as a local file, browser restrictions can disable features such as block details on hover and the elevation overlay in Chrome. Firefox works best for local-file viewing. Slime chunk results may also be unreliable; confirm that slimes spawn before spending substantial effort on a location.

Rendered output and serving

Bedrock Viz can generate images showing world layers, biomes, block light, block height, and grass color. It can also create movies of world layers from bedrock to the build limit, but that workflow requires ffmpeg. Generated maps can be served locally through NGINX in Docker, and the browser viewer is based on OpenLayers. That offers a route from inspection to a locally served map, but it requires more setup than simply opening an image.

Pricing

Bedrock Viz is free: its Free plan is free and is GPL-2.0 licensed for Minecraft Bedrock Edition worlds. It includes offline viewing and dimension maps, with no paid tier needed for the core map and output workflows described here. There are no seat, quota, trial, or renewal terms to weigh against the free plan.

Platforms

Bedrock Viz is listed for Linux, macOS, Windows, and web. The README describes a Windows 10 zip containing bedrock-viz.exe, Homebrew installation for macOS 10.15 and later, and source download and compilation for Linux. The viewer runs in a browser; local-file restrictions may affect its features. Android-world backup use is described through DropSync and Dropbox, but that method was only lightly tested, so it is not the strongest choice for a dependable backup workflow.

Who it's for

Bedrock builders and world owners who want offline maps, terrain inspection, or renderable visual outputs will get the clearest fit. It is less suitable for anyone unwilling to protect a save with a backup, seeking dependable slime-chunk predictions, or wanting a zero-setup hosted map. If a run encounters a problem, the usage and build instructions point users to the progress window for details.

Pros and cons

Pros: Bedrock-specific coverage spans the Overworld and Nether across 256 layers, with map overlays, measurement, and markers that support practical world inspection.
Pros: Image and movie output broaden its use beyond browsing; movies can show layers from bedrock to the build limit.
Pros: Free GPL-2.0 licensing and offline viewing make it possible to inspect a world without paying for a service or relying on a hosted viewer.
Cons: The program can change world files, making backup copies a necessary safeguard rather than an optional habit.
Cons: Local browser restrictions can remove useful viewer details, and Firefox is the best option for local-file use.
Cons: Slime chunk findings are not dependable enough to act on without confirming spawns in the world.
Cons: Linux users must compile from source, while movie output requires a separate ffmpeg dependency.

Alternatives

For a browser-first option with a defined free allowance, BedrockMap offers a free tier with one world upload, a 1500x1500 block render area, two renders per day, three zoom levels, and public sharing links; choose it when those hosted-style limits and sharing suit the job better than Bedrock Viz's local-file workflow.

The Explorer's Friend is a free, MIT-licensed server-side Minecraft map mod or plugin, a better direction for readers seeking a server-side map approach. For worlds already in Anvil format, Mapcrafter is a free alternative, but it requires Minecraft 1.6 resource packs and does not target Bedrock world files.

Tectonicus is another free mapping option. uNmINeD is free for personal use, while BlueMap is the Java Edition choice and requires Java 25 or later for server plugin or mod use (its standalone CLI documentation lists Java 21 or later).

Chunkmap has an open-source CLI under the MIT license and a beta offering, making it worth considering for readers drawn to an open-source command-line alternative. mcview is another free option for readers on iOS, macOS, or Windows.

For more choices, browse Minecraft World Map Viewers or, for lower-level file work rather than world mapping, Hex Editors.

Verdict

Bedrock Viz is a strong fit for Bedrock players who want offline, layered world inspection plus images or movies without paying for a map tool. Its decisive advantages are Bedrock-focused coverage and varied outputs; its decisive drawbacks are the need to protect world files, local-browser limitations, and uncertain slime-chunk results. Choose it if those safeguards and caveats are acceptable; look elsewhere for a hosted workflow, reliable slime-chunk guidance, or an Anvil-based mapping tool.
