Übersicht
Übersicht is a free macOS app that places the output of system commands on the desktop in small widgets. Widgets can present information as tables, charts, or graphs, adapt to screen sizes, and are written in HTML5, JavaScript, and React JSX. The app includes a gallery and installation instructions for community widgets, spanning categories such as system monitoring, clocks, calendars, weather, RSS feeds, networking, and media. For development, Übersicht watches the widget directory and updates the display when files change. Commands run at a configurable interval, once per second by default, or can be set not to refresh automatically. A built-in local proxy supports Ajax requests to external sites, and AppleScript scripting is available. The download page specifies macOS 12 or later, and the app is released under the GNU General Public License version 3 or a later version at the user's option. Widgets can execute arbitrary code, so the maker advises checking their source; malicious code cannot be ruled out.
Widgetter
Widgetter is a Mac desktop app for arranging widgets and customizing wallpaper. It puts system information and common controls on the desktop, with options to position widgets, keep them above other windows, and adjust their size, color, and font. System-monitoring widgets cover CPU, memory, battery, storage, cooling fan speed, internet speed, and downloaded file volume. Other options include calendar, weather, music, photos, tasks and reminders, currency and cryptocurrency quotes, and date and time. The music widget can work with Apple Music or Spotify when the music app is open and Widgetter has permission to access music. The app also offers 4K and 5K wallpapers and desktop skins. It is Mac-only and requires macOS 13.0 or later. A basic version starts working after installation, and in-app purchases are offered. Prices listed are free, $4.99 a month, $39.99 a year, and $59.99, paid once. Subscription use is not permitted on multiple devices. The developer reports that analytics may collect device ID, product interaction, and crash data not linked to the user; Apple says it has not verified those practices.
