Overview

Founded in 2012 and based in Gaylord, Michigan, BiddingOwl handles event administration alongside bidding. Organizers can set up and duplicate events, preview items, sell tickets, take donations, and manage checkout. That breadth can simplify operations for groups running varied auction formats; organizations focused on digital bidding should account for its performance fee and payment processing costs.

Key features

The platform supports online, mobile, silent, live, and offline auctions. Donations, admission and raffle tickets, Fund-a-Need, and paddle raises come as standard features, so organizations can combine common fundraising activities without buying separate add-ons.

Bidders can save items to a watchlist and set a maximum proxy bid, allowing automated bids up to their chosen ceiling. SMS and email notifications cover outbids, wins, and event updates. These tools help remote bidders stay engaged, but the 5% fee on winning online and mobile bids makes that convenience a meaningful budget consideration.

Stripe and PayPal integrations handle payments; organizers can also record cash and check payments by marking invoices paid. Stripe and PayPal use SSL encryption and are PCI compliant. Item data can be imported from CSV and exported, and organizers can retain their data. One account can manage multiple organizations and auctions at once, a practical fit for users overseeing several groups or events.

BiddingOwl offers phone and email support during weekday office hours, plus 24/7 phone support for critical emergencies. Customers can arrange personal training by phone or email. The company says its AWS-powered platform is built for high volumes of bidding activity.

Pricing

The traditional silent/live auction service costs 0.00 USD per free. It covers event setup, item previews, printed bid sheets, ticket sales, donations, and checkout. Payment processor fees may apply, so free refers to the platform service rather than necessarily every transaction cost. This plan suits organizations holding traditional events that want to avoid a platform charge.

The online/mobile auction plan costs 5.00 USD per once, billed as a 5% performance fee on winning online or mobile bids. A charge applies only when an item receives a winning online/mobile bid; pre-bid fees are based on the pre-bid amount. This is a variable cost for organizations choosing digital bidding, not an upfront subscription, but it can make the service less attractive when minimizing auction fees is the priority.

Platforms

BiddingOwl supports Android, iOS, and the web, giving organizers and participants access across mobile and browser platforms.

Who it's for

BiddingOwl is a sensible fit for nonprofits, schools, charities, and other organizations that mix silent or live auctions with ticketing, donations, or online participation. Its multiple-organization account support also suits people managing events for more than one group. It is less compelling for organizations whose primary requirement is online/mobile bidding at the lowest possible transaction cost.

Pros and cons

Pros: Traditional silent/live services have no platform charge, and standard fundraising tools include donations, tickets, Fund-a-Need, and paddle raises.
Pros: CSV data handling, event duplication, and multi-organization management support recurring events and users handling several auctions.
Cons: Winning online/mobile bids incur a 5% performance fee, with pre-bid fees based on the pre-bid amount; payment processor fees may also apply.
Cons: Regular phone and email support is limited to weekday office hours, although critical emergencies have 24/7 phone support.

Alternatives

Verdict

Choose BiddingOwl if your organization wants traditional silent or live auctions at no platform charge, with core fundraising tools and event management in the same service. Its flexibility across auction formats is the main reason to choose it; the 5% charge on winning online and mobile bids is the main reason to look elsewhere if digital bidding will drive substantial sales.
