Overview

BinEd puts hexadecimal codes beside text and can display codes in binary, octal, or decimal. That range makes it practical both for reading file contents in familiar text form and examining their underlying values. Unicode and other charsets, insert and overwrite modes, highlighted text or hexadecimal searches, and undo and redo cover the core editing workflow.

The project is free and open source under Apache License 2.0; additional addons may use other licenses. Its Android app requires no registration, and its privacy policy says it obtains no information or shares collected data with third parties. For more options in the category, browse Hex Editors.

Key features

Large-file support: The maker says BinEd supports files up to exabytes, an ambitious ceiling for working with very large data. On Android, this is qualified as partial file mode, so the same expectation does not apply to the mobile app.
Search and modification: Text and hexadecimal searches highlight matches, while insert and overwrite modes suit different kinds of edits. Search and replace is only partial in the editor application.
Comparison and integrations: Byte-for-byte comparison is marked complete. Integrations are listed for NetBeans, IntelliJ, Eclipse, JDeveloper, BlueJ, jEdit, Autopsy, and Ghidra, giving users of those tools ways to fit BinEd into existing workflows.
Developer extensibility: Scripting and plugin support are included, and BinEd is also available as a component. That makes it relevant beyond standalone file editing, though addon licensing can differ from the project’s main license.

There are material cautions for heavy work: the maker identifies possible Java heap-space freezes after many large modifications, possible corruption in delta mode if another application changes the files simultaneously, and memory leaks. Users making extensive or concurrent changes should weigh these risks before relying on it for critical files.

Pricing

BinEd is free. The free plan is the free and open-source editor, and the Android app is described as a free service. There is no separate paid tier or trial to weigh; the main trade-offs are the Android partial-file mode and the stability issues associated with heavy modifications.

Platforms

The desktop Java application runs on systems with Java 8 or later, including Windows, macOS, Linux variants, and BSD. Downloads include Windows and macOS installers, a ZIP for other platforms, and an Android APK. A browser demo runs using CheerpJ by Leaning Technologies. The project’s supported-platform list also includes web, Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

Who it's for

BinEd is a strong fit for users who want a free binary editor with several numeric views, charset support, comparison, and integrations with development or analysis tools. Its component, scripting, and plugin support also suit workflows that need more than a standalone viewer. Android users should account for partial file mode; anyone planning repeated large edits should take the possible freezes, memory leaks, and delta-mode risk seriously.

Pros and cons

Pros

Flexible inspection: Hexadecimal, text, binary, octal, and decimal views make it easier to examine data in the representation a task calls for.
Useful editing basics: Charset support, insert and overwrite modes, highlighted search, and undo/redo cover common inspection and modification needs.
Broad reach and integration: Desktop, Android, and browser-demo options plus integrations with eight named applications offer several ways to use it.
Free and open source: The Apache-licensed project has no paid plan, though addons may have different licenses.

Cons

Android is constrained: Its file mode is partial, limiting how directly the maker’s large-file claim carries over to mobile.
Heavy edits may be unstable: The maker warns of heap-space freezes after many large modifications and memory leaks.
Delta mode has a concurrency hazard: Changes by another application during editing may corrupt files.
Search and replace is incomplete: It is marked partial in the editor application.

Alternatives

HexEd.it is another free option, with listed platform support extending to iOS as well as Android, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Its free plan allows commercial and non-commercial use, but prohibits copying the code to another server and selling it.

Bedrock Viz is free and GPL-2.0 licensed for Minecraft Bedrock Edition worlds, so it is the relevant alternative when that is the target data.

REHex is a free GPL-2.0 option with Windows, macOS, and Linux packages; choose it if those desktop platforms and its licensing are a better fit.

010 Editor has a paid model and a free trial on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its listed New User — Home/Academic Use plan is 59.95 USD per month with a perpetual license; the commercial plan price is custom pricing. It is an option for readers willing to consider a paid alternative, though BinEd avoids that cost.

Hecate is a free, MIT-licensed alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with no plan limits stated.

Hex Editor Neo is Windows-only and freemium, with a free tier offering basic editing features and limited or no support. It may suit a Windows user who is content with that narrower free tier.

CombineZP is a free, GPL-licensed Windows option; its compiled version is referenced as version 1.0 (x86).

dhex is another free alternative for Linux and macOS.

Verdict

Choose BinEd if you want a free, cross-platform binary editor with multiple data representations, comparison, and integrations into a wide set of developer and analysis tools. Its breadth is compelling for general inspection and editing, but Android’s partial file mode and the warnings around heavy or concurrent modifications are good reasons to look elsewhere for mobile-first work or critical large-file editing.
