Overview

Birdfont combines vector font creation with SVG import and support for monochrome and color font formats. It runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, so the choice of desktop platform need not dictate the workflow. Before starting a project, settle two questions: whether the font needs commercial-use rights and whether its output requires Plus-only formats.

Key features

Vector artwork and font production

Import SVG artwork from Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator, then use Birdfont’s included kerning, ligature substitutions and alternates to shape the typeface. The Open Source and Commercial plans export TTF and monochrome SVG fonts. That is a useful set for conventional font projects, but buyers needing OTF with OpenType CFF outlines will need Plus.

Color and variable fonts

Plus adds color fonts, OpenType SVG, COLR/CPAL, single-stroke CNC fonts and variable fonts. It can also export multiple static fonts from a single variable master. Those capabilities make Plus the relevant plan for designers building color or variable type; they are not part of the cheaper tiers.

Privacy and support

The app does not collect user data by default, though users can opt into crash reports. The website uses cookies for login and keeps a regular request log; purchase records and receipts are kept for commercial buyers. Help and bug reporting are available by email, Mastodon, Twitter, Facebook and GitHub issues.

Pricing

Birdfont is freemium, with a free plan and paid options from 4.99 USD per once. There is no free trial. The plans differ in licensing and output, so the lowest price is not automatically the right fit.

Open Source — 0.00 USD per free: Source code under GNU GPL, TTF and monochrome SVG fonts, kerning, ligature substitutions, alternates and SVG import. Commercial use is permitted, making this the strongest no-cost choice for users comfortable with the open-source license.
Freeware — 0.00 USD per free: Binary version for creating free fonts under the SIL Open Font License. It costs nothing, but its stated font-use terms make it unsuitable for commercial-font projects.
Commercial — 4.99 USD per once: Commercial fonts, TTF and monochrome SVG export, kerning, ligature substitutions, alternates and SVG import. Upgrades are billed for one year; the purchased version continues working afterward. This is the straightforward low-cost option for commercial monochrome fonts, but it does not include Plus formats.
Plus — 9.99 USD per once: Commercial fonts plus color fonts, OpenType SVG, OTF, COLR/CPAL, single-stroke CNC fonts and variable fonts. Upgrades are billed for one year, and the purchased version continues working afterward. Choose it when those advanced outputs or workflows are essential.

A PayPal subscription provides the latest version and all upgrades only while the subscription lasts. Birdfont is also available through Steam.

Platforms

Birdfont runs on Linux, Windows and macOS. Its desktop coverage is broad, but the stated platforms do not include a mobile or browser version.

Who it's for

Birdfont is a good fit for independent designers making fonts from vector artwork, especially those who want desktop support across the major operating systems or need to distinguish free-font licensing from commercial use. It is less suitable for projects that require Plus-only color or variable-font features on a free or Commercial license.

Pros and cons

Pros: SVG import from Inkscape and Illustrator lets designers reuse vector artwork; free and paid plans make licensing choices explicit; Commercial and Plus purchases continue working after the one-year upgrade period ends.
Cons: Freeware is limited to fonts under the SIL Open Font License; Commercial is restricted to TTF and monochrome SVG among the stated formats; color, OpenType SVG, OTF and variable fonts require the more expensive Plus tier.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Font Design Software. Consider these alternatives when their stated plans or platform coverage better suit the project:

FontBob has a free plan with drawing, spacing, preview, OTF export, production-ready fonts and sharing, and supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Pick it when mobile or browser access matters alongside desktop use.
Prototypo has a free plan with one user, one week of support and a limited parameter range, plus a Pro plan at 8.25 USD per month; it runs as an extension and on Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Consider it if that platform mix and subscription option fit better.
PixelForge is free to download until version 1.0, with a free pre-release plan, and runs on Linux and Windows. Choose it if those platforms and its pre-release terms suit you.
Calligraphr offers a free browser-based plan at 0.00 GBP per free with registration, one concurrent font, 75 characters per font, two variants per character and no ligatures. It suits a limited-character project that can work within those caps.
Fontra is free and open source, browser-based and cross-platform, with Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows support. Choose it if a browser-based or self-hosted option is a better match.
FontForge is free and open source for Linux, macOS and Windows, with source code access and redistribution permitted. Consider it if those open-source terms are the deciding factor.
Runebender is free and open source, with a native editor and experimental browser build; it runs on Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Its alpha status makes it a fit for readers willing to use alpha software.
FontLab 8 is a paid alternative for macOS and Windows, with a 97.00 USD per once Starter three-month license. Consider it if that license and platform range meet your needs.

Verdict

Choose Birdfont if you want a cross-platform desktop font editor with SVG import and a clear path from free-font creation to commercial licensing. Its low one-time Commercial price is compelling for monochrome projects, while Plus covers color and variable work. Look elsewhere if you need a different platform or do not want those advanced capabilities tied to the higher tier.
