In their own words
Blackwire Drive Eraser & Sanitizer
Blackwire Drive Eraser & Sanitizer sanitizes supported drives for home users, technicians, repair shops, IT teams and businesses. Its methods include software overwrite, supported firmware sanitization and native NVMe Block Erase on approved connections; NVMe Cryptographic Erase is a candidate only when evidence supports it. Clear, Purge and Destroy workflows align with NIST SP 800-88 Rev.2, though the product is not certified or endorsed by NIST. Verification may use sampled or full read-back and report coverage, mismatches, errors and per-pass status. Supported interrupted overwrite jobs can resume from authenticated checkpoints after drive identity is rechecked, but verification starts over. Before raw drive access, the app requires typed confirmation and blocks the running Windows system disk and the app or Toolbox host disk. USB adapters, RAID controllers, virtual disks and unsupported connections may restrict direct firmware commands. Free is free; Home Pro is $9.99, paid once; Business is $39.99, paid once. The Windows installer and portable app require administrator privileges for direct physical-drive access.
ShredOS
ShredOS is a small, bootable operating system for erasing disks with nwipe. The project provides .img and .iso images for USB drives, CD/DVD, Ventoy, and virtual machines. It supports x86 PCs and servers, plus Intel-based Macs, with BIOS or UEFI booting. Nwipe offers several erasure methods and pseudo-random generators, configurable rounds, verification, and a final blanking pass. ShredOS can create PDF erasure certificates and log files, with reports focused on a selected drive or the system. The image also contains utilities including smartmontools, hdparm, nvme-cli, sg3_utils, hexedit, and parallel. Documented workflows include unattended autonuke, PXE booting, persistent configuration, custom scripts, and headless operation. A user-enabled Telnet server is available in documented setups for systems with faulty or missing display hardware. Logs and PDFs can be sent to FTP or TFTP servers, though FTP does not encrypt data. The project warns that wiping is irreversible and that writing an image to a USB flash drive overwrites its existing contents. ShredOS is free and open source, with 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
