Overview

The platform creates, issues and manages digital badges and certificates, with public verification, expiry management and custom branding. Badge earners can keep and share credentials through CanCred Passport, a free companion portfolio for web, iOS and Android.

Learning Agents hosts CanCred.ca and says it has provided the service as CanCred.ca since 2016; the company says it was established in 2000. Its headquarters are in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and its technology is hosted in Canada, with stated respect for Canadian and European Union privacy laws.

Key features

Badges can be multilingual, carry third-party endorsements and align with external frameworks. Evidence-based application forms support programs that require applicants to provide evidence. Pro adds customizable PDF badges, making it the relevant tier when that format is part of the credential experience.

Nested milestone pathways support branching, with mandatory or elective steps. That flexibility suits programs with multiple routes to achievement, rather than a simple one-off certificate workflow.

Plugins are offered for Moodle, Totara LMS, WordPress, Priima, ItsLearning, Canvas LMS and D2L Brightspace. Canvas and Brightspace require Pro-level LTI integration, so organizations using those systems need to factor the top tier into their choice. The documented Open RESTful API gives developers a route to build plugins; LTI services are also Pro-level.

Pricing

The 60-day trial runs at Pro level. After it ends, an account without a paid subscription lapses to Free, whose library is limited to two usable badges. Badges issued during or after the trial remain hosted and verifiable indefinitely, with a guarantee of at least two years.

Plan	Price	Library and issuance	Support
Free	0.00 CAD per free	2 badge library; 5,000 badges/year; 50 badges/day	No onboarding or support
Basic	495.00 CAD per year	10 badge library; 5,000 badges/year; 50 badges/day	Limited onboarding and support
Premium	1295.00 CAD per year	Unlimited badge library; 15,000 badges/year; 500 badges/day; +10,000 badges at no cost	Standard support
Pro	2365.00 CAD per year	Unlimited badge library; 50,000 badges/year; 2,000 badges/day; +45,000 badges at no cost	Priority support

Free can accommodate a small credential library, but no support and a two-badge library make it a narrow long-term option. Basic keeps the same annual and daily issuance caps as Free while raising the library to 10 badges and adding limited onboarding and support; it suits modest programs that need more badge types, not more throughput.

Premium removes the library cap, raises the annual and daily quotas, and adds 10,000 badges at no cost. It is the practical middle tier for growing programs that do not need Pro's LTI services or higher volume. Pro is for organizations needing its 50,000 annual and 2,000 daily quotas, priority support, customizable PDF badges or Pro-level LTI. The generous stated quotas make it important to compare the actual volume needed before paying for the top tier.

Platforms

CanCred Factory is available on web, iOS and Android, and provides API access. CanCred Passport, the recipient portfolio, is accessible on web, iOS and Android.

Who it's for

The maker describes the audience as educators, trainers, employers, associations, non-profits and communities. The strongest case is an organization that needs verifiable badges, structured pathways and integrations with learning systems. A simple credential program with low volume and no need for pathway design, support or Pro-only integrations may not justify the annual subscription.

Pros and cons

Pros: Flexible pathways support branching and required or elective milestones, useful for programs with more than one route to completion.
Pros: Open Badges 3.0, an Open RESTful API and a broad plugin range give credential programs standards-based and integration options.
Pros: Trial-issued badges remain hosted and verifiable beyond the trial, reducing the risk that a test run's credentials disappear when an account falls back to Free.
Cons: The Free and Basic plans both cap issuance at 5,000 per year and 50 per day; Basic primarily buys library room and limited support, not greater throughput.
Cons: Canvas and Brightspace LTI, PDF badge customization and priority support require Pro, priced at 2365.00 CAD per year.
Cons: Free includes no onboarding or support, so organizations that need help must move to a paid tier.

Alternatives

Credentialing Software is a broader category to explore when you want to compare credentialing tools beyond this Open Badge-focused platform.

Choose POK if its Free Web2 offer of unlimited digital credentials and no user caps better matches your volume needs; its plans also include a pay-as-you-go Blockchain Verify option at 0.30 USD per once.

Certopus is another freemium option, with a free starter plan capped at 250 credentials, two events and one limited seat. CertSeal offers a free plan capped at 100 certificates per year, one batch, one organization member and one workspace.

Open Badge Factory may suit buyers comparing another Open Badge service with a free trial and a Basic plan at 220.00 EUR per year. Certifier has a free Starter tier capped at 250 credentials per year for one user.

Openbadges.me has a free Starter plan capped at 10 badge recipients. Sertifier offers a free tier for up to 25 recipients with unlimited credentials. IssueBadge is a freemium alternative with 20 free credits and no expiring trial.

Verdict

Choose CanCred Factory for an organization that needs standards-based badges, configurable progression pathways and developer or learning-system integration in one platform. Its free trial and credential retention terms make it possible to evaluate a Pro-level program without losing issued badges on fallback. Look elsewhere if your priority is a larger free library, higher issuance at a lower tier, or avoiding annual costs for a straightforward credential workflow.
