In their own words
Blurb BookWright
Blurb BookWright is desktop software for designing custom books, including photo books, paperbacks, hardcovers, magazines, notebooks, and wall art. It provides customizable templates, freestyle grids, typography and cover tools, bleed lines, and trim guides. Image tools support scaling, cropping, enhancement, and auto-retouching powered by Perfectly Clear by EyeQ. Text Flow fits text into frames and accepts Rich Text Format imports, while Photo Manager imports photos from Adobe Lightroom, SmugMug, and Dropbox. Users can work offline in the desktop software, but publishing requires an internet connection and a free Blurb account is needed for features and publishing options. Finished projects can be printed on demand, ordered in bulk, or purchased as PDFs. BookWright is free to use; users pay for a book when they send it to print. Listed requirements include Windows 7, 8, or 10, or macOS 10.13 or later, with 2GB RAM and 500MB storage. Books can be up to 440 pages.
Folius
Folius is a browser-based tool for formatting books for print and ebook. Authors can write in its editor or import a Word document, then review and adjust detected chapter breaks. Themes and controls cover type, spacing, chapter openings, headings, and running matter. Print settings include trim size, type size, margins, bleed, edges, and crop marks, with a paginated preview. Listed exports include print and screen PDFs, EPUB, static HTML, Markdown, and a Folius backup. The free plan offers unlimited books and chapters, browser editing, Word import, live print preview, and EPUB, Markdown, and backup exports. Membership is listed at $99 a year, billed annually at $8.25 per month; it adds PDFs, hosted images and cover uploads, static HTML export, collaboration, and public read-only sharing. The pricing note also lists paid plans from $12/mo. Members can invite editors to collaborate without those editors having a membership, but a membership is personal rather than an organization-wide licence. Users retain ownership of their book content.
