Overview

Game entries combine reference information with member ratings, forums, and other game-related material. The community adds reviews, images, play aids, translations, session reports, and live discussions, giving a prospective player several ways to learn about a title beyond its basic entry.

Members can track games they own, have played, rate, comment on, or follow, and account holders can log plays from a collection or an individual game page. That makes the site useful not only for researching a game, but for maintaining a continuing record of a tabletop library and its use.

Key features

Game reference and community: Ratings, reviews, forums, images, translations, play aids, and session reports give entries depth, though their community-driven character means the experience is oriented toward member activity as well as lookup.
Collection and play records: Collection tracking covers owned and played games as well as titles members rate, comment on, or follow. Logging can start from either a collection or game entry, which keeps personal tracking connected to the catalog.
Marketplace and trades: Geek Market transactions and member game-trade activity extend the site beyond reference and record-keeping for people looking to exchange games.
Data access: API access and XML and CSV exports offer ways to work with catalog data outside the site's ordinary browsing experience.

Pricing

Registered membership and core site access are free: the Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There is no free trial because access is already free, and the plan has no stated quota or seat limit. This is the right starting point for anyone who wants the catalog, community, collections, play logging, marketplace, or API access without paying.

Annual contributions add supporter perks rather than unlocking a separate core plan. At $15 or more, supporters receive an icon. At $25 or more, they also get ad blocking, a read feed for past subscriptions, and historical gaming trends. The higher contribution is most relevant to regular members who value those additions; the lower level provides recognition but not the listed ad and history features. BoardGameGeek says it relies on member support and advertising to cover expenses including servers, bandwidth, and employees.

Platforms

BoardGameGeek supports web, Android, and iOS. Its official app is identified for iPhone and iPad, as well as Google Play for Android. The catalog covers board games, card games, tabletop games, wargames, and traditional games.

Who it's for

Choose BoardGameGeek if you want a broad tabletop reference paired with member discussion and personal records, particularly if collecting and logging plays matter as much as looking up games. It is less compelling for someone seeking a focused console or PC video-game library rather than tabletop coverage, or someone who wants supporter features without an annual contribution.

Pros and cons

Pro: Reference pages and substantial member contributions bring research and discussion together around games.
Pro: Collection tracking and play logging keep owned titles and actual play activity connected to the catalog.
Pro: Free core access includes API access and XML and CSV exports, useful for readers who want more than on-site browsing.
Con: Ad blocking and historical gaming trends require support at $25 or more annually; the $15 level only adds a supporter icon.
Con: Accounts require users to be at least 18, so younger players cannot use the registered collection and logging features.

Alternatives

For a broader look at category choices, browse Game Databases. Pick LaunchBox instead if you want a Windows or Android video-game library: its free Windows Starter plan covers importing and playing games, while its $30.00 USD one-time Regular plan is a paid Windows option. RaiderZ Game Database is a free web and Windows alternative for a more specific game database. Choose Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Database if your interest is specifically Yu-Gi-Oh! cards; it is free across web, Android, and iOS, with no paid plans or usage limits stated.

For developers rather than personal tabletop tracking, RAWG offers a web API focused on video-game data, with a free tier limited to non-commercial projects, up to 20,000 requests per month, and required backlinks. YGOPRODeck is another API option for Yu-Gi-Oh! data, with a free tier capped at 20 requests per second and access blocked for an hour if exceeded. IGDB suits API users who can meet its commercial partnership requirement for commercial use; its non-commercial API is free. The free non-commercial API from The Visual Novel Database is a better fit for visual novels, with request and execution-time limits. NostalgiaDB is another free web and API option; play and archive downloads require a free registered account, and API use requires a key.

Verdict

BoardGameGeek is the strongest fit for tabletop players who want one free home for game reference, community contributions, collection management, and play history. Its combination of breadth and tracking makes it more useful than a catalog alone; look elsewhere if you need a video-game-focused database or do not meet the 18-year account minimum.
