Overview

Bonro links mobile receipt capture to a browser dashboard for organizing expenses and preparing tax exports. It is a better fit for people who need structured business records than for anyone looking only to store receipt images. The service does not file taxes, replace a tax adviser or provide legal or tax advice.

Key features

Capture and extraction

OCR runs on-device with Apple Vision on iOS and ML Kit on Android. AI extracts the merchant, date, total, VAT and category, and each field is editable. That makes it possible to correct a record before using it, but users still need to review the extraction rather than assume every field is right.

Receipts queue locally when the device is offline and synchronize once connectivity returns. Users can also forward receipts to a private account inbox. Bonro parses electronic invoices, reading ZUGFeRD, XRechnung, FatturaPA, Facturae and UBL as structured data. This combination suits businesses handling both paper receipts and digital invoices.

Dashboard and exports

The web dashboard offers searchable receipts, uploads, KPIs, trends, recoverable VAT and tax exports. Export choices include DATEV, FEC, Libro de Facturas, Registro IVA Acquisti, Auditfile XAF, HMRC SA103F, Xero and QuickBooks formats. That breadth is useful when records need to move into different country-specific or accounting workflows, although an export does not make Bonro a tax filing service.

Privacy and support

Bonro says data is stored on EU servers in Frankfurt, encrypted in transit with TLS 1.2+ and encrypted at rest. Production access is limited to the founders, and users can export or delete their data in the app. Support is by email, with replies usually within one working day; Pro adds priority email support.

Pricing

The free plan costs €0 forever and allows 5 receipts per month, with on-device OCR and AI categorization but no export. It is suitable for occasional capture or trying the workflow, not for regular business expenses that need tax-format output.

Starter costs €6.99 per month and allows 30 receipts per month, one country, one business and single-country tax export. It is the practical step up for one business operating in one country whose monthly volume fits the cap. The quota and single-country scope make it a poor fit for heavier receipt volume or multiple businesses.

Pro costs €12.99 per month and includes unlimited receipts, every EU export format, all 10 countries and unlimited businesses, plus priority email support. Its 14-day free trial gives a short window to assess the full plan; the plan is the clearest fit for users with larger volumes, multiple businesses or cross-country export needs. Bonro’s pricing note gives the trial length but no renewal terms.

Platforms

Bonro runs on Android, iOS and the web. On-device OCR is specified for the two mobile platforms, while the browser dashboard provides receipt search, uploads and reporting. That split supports capture on a phone and review from a browser.

Who it's for

Bonro is aimed at working adults, self-employed people and small-business owners, especially those who need to keep expenses organized for EU or UK tax workflows. It is a stronger match for people who value structured invoice parsing and tax-format exports than for users who need tax filing or professional advice within the product.

Pros and cons

Pro: Editable extraction of merchant, date, total, VAT and category makes correction possible before records are used.
Pro: Offline queuing, email forwarding and structured e-invoice parsing accommodate several ways business expenses arrive.
Pro: A broad set of export formats and a browser dashboard support review and handoff to tax or accounting workflows.
Con: The free plan stops at 5 receipts per month and provides no export, limiting its use for ongoing bookkeeping.
Con: Starter’s 30-receipt monthly cap and one-country, one-business scope constrain growing or multi-country operations.
Con: Bonro does not file taxes or provide tax or legal advice, so users remain responsible for those tasks.

Alternatives

Receipt Scanner Apps is a useful place to compare the wider category. Choose Easy Expense if its free allowance of 10 receipt scans per month and two expense reports better match a lighter workflow. Receipt Reader AI is worth comparing for a free tier that includes 10 AI scans per month, one account and PDF export.

Veryfi Invoices OCR API is an alternative for teams evaluating invoice OCR through an API, though its stated Starter plan is $500/mo minimum commitment. Receipt Scanner is another mobile option on Android and iOS, with a free plan and a Pro tier offering unlimited expense tracking and report creation. AutoEntry may suit buyers seeking a paid service with a Bronze plan at $13.00 per month, 50 credits per month and unlimited users.

Foreceipt is worth considering if a free allowance of up to 100 receipts, two team members and limited PDF or Excel reporting is a closer match. Neat is another option to compare for buyers considering paid software with add-ons. Smart Receipts may suit users who prefer manual receipt entry and basic expense reports on a free mobile-app plan.

Verdict

Bonro is a sound choice for self-employed people and small businesses that need editable receipt and invoice records, mobile capture, a browser dashboard and exports across EU and UK tax workflows. Its main advantage is the path from varied receipt inputs to structured data and multiple export formats. Look elsewhere if you need tax filing or advice, or if the free plan’s five monthly receipts and lack of export are not enough and the paid quotas or price do not fit.
