In their own words
Bookalope
Bookalope provides AI-assisted tools to structure, format, and clean book documents, then validate the generated files against industry standards. Depending on the plan, it imports Word and similar files, EPUB 2 or 3, InDesign, XML, and HTML. Outputs include accessible EPUB3, accessible print-ready PDF, structured InDesign, and XML or HTML files. New accounts can use all the tools for free, but converted and exported test books carry watermarks. The service also offers a free, open-source Adobe InDesign extension through Adobe Exchange and a free, open-source cloud API for XML or customized production workflows. Bookalope says its tools were approved by Benetech in 2024 as born-accessible publishing tools. The web interface supports current major browsers on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. Bookalope’s FAQ says the service does not import PDF files.
PubCoder
PubCoder is a desktop authoring tool for creating interactive digital publications and exporting them as apps, HTML, or ebooks. Authors can connect click and touch gestures to animations, videos, and sounds without code. Export formats include native iOS and Android apps, EPUB 3 Fixed Layout, HTML5, XPUB, and Kindle Format 8. Accessibility features include semantic metadata, image descriptions, screen-reader support, and read-aloud tools. The editor integrates with Adobe InDesign, After Effects through Bodymovin, YouTube, Vimeo, Unsplash, The Noun Project, and Google Fonts. For distribution, SHELF is a white-label library platform for web and native apps. Its XPUB format encrypts content files with custom DRM, and downloaded content can be used offline; SHELF also provides access and interaction analytics. The Standard plan costs €99/yr plus VAT if needed and includes unlimited publications and all features for macOS and Windows. The 15-day trial includes all features, requires registration, and does not require a credit card. Paid subscriptions can be installed on multiple owned computers but used on only one at a time.
