Overview

Bookmate brings together a broad catalog, personal uploads, reading controls, and social features. Its free collection of 50,000 books makes it possible to explore without paying, while the Premium offer includes books, comic books, audiobooks, and podcasts, plus offline use. The account restriction is firm: one person may use it on no more than three devices. Copyrighted books also cannot be downloaded and distributed outside Bookmate.

Key features

Catalog and personal books

The catalog spans 1,800,000 books and 100,000 audiobooks in 16 languages. That range is useful for readers who switch between formats or languages, although the free collection is much smaller than the full catalog. Users can upload their own FB2 or EPUB files and use them on a smartphone, tablet, or desktop, giving Bookmate a role as a home for personal books as well as subscribed content.

Reading, listening, and social tools

Brightness, font, and background-color controls let readers adjust the display to their preferences. Audiobooks can be saved for offline listening and synchronized across devices, helping listeners continue from where they stopped. The service also lets users follow friends’ reading, share books and quotes, and create or subscribe to themed bookshelves. Those features will appeal to readers who enjoy exchanging recommendations; they matter less to anyone looking for a strictly private library.

Pricing

Bookmate uses a freemium subscription model, with a free plan and a 7-day trial. The Premium offer is free for 7 days and includes books, comic books, audiobooks, podcasts, personal-book uploads, and offline reading and listening; it can be cancelled anytime. Treat that as a trial offer, not an ongoing subscription price. Annual and monthly subscription options are described, but their prices are custom pricing.

The 50,000-book free collection gives non-paying readers a meaningful catalog to browse, but the Premium offer is the one that explicitly brings together the wider set of formats and offline access. The trial is short, and readers should check the renewal price and terms before continuing. Family sharing is indicated, but it does not override the terms’ one-person account limit, so this is not a shared household account.

Platforms

Bookmate runs on Android, iOS, and the web. The stated platform range covers common mobile and browser use, while personal uploads can be used on a smartphone, tablet, or desktop.

Who it's for

Bookmate makes the most sense for an individual reader or listener who wants e-books and audiobooks together, values a sizable multilingual catalog, and may bring along FB2 or EPUB files. Offline audiobook access and synced playback are useful for listening away from a connection or moving between devices. Readers who need a known ongoing price, a shared account for several people, or permission to redistribute copyrighted books should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: A catalog of 1,800,000 books and 100,000 audiobooks across 16 languages gives format- and language-switching readers a wide selection.
Pros: FB2 and EPUB uploads, adjustable reading display, and offline audiobook listening combine personal-library flexibility with subscription content.
Pros: The 50,000-book free collection offers a substantial starting point without a paid plan.
Cons: Monthly and annual options have custom pricing, so readers cannot readily compare the ongoing cost from the stated prices.
Cons: One-person use and a three-device ceiling rule out sharing one account across a household.
Cons: Copyrighted books cannot be downloaded and distributed outside Bookmate, and the terms disclaim warranties about website or service security.

Alternatives

For a broader set of audiobook options, browse Audiobook Apps. Playary is the alternative to consider if you want a free service spanning music, podcasts, movies, audiobooks, and TV shows, with ad-free listening on its Premium plan. Choose Audible instead if you prefer a paid audiobook subscription with a stated Standard price of 8.99 USD per month after 30 days and one audiobook each month from its collection.

Audiobookshelf is a free, self-hosted audiobook and podcast server for readers who want to run their own collection. Sora offers free ebooks and audiobooks as a student reading app. Hoopla is worth considering if you have a valid card from a participating public library; available titles vary by library catalog.

Kobo Books is an option for readers who want audiobooks in Kobo Plus Listen for 7.99 USD per month after a 14-day trial, plus applicable taxes. Ubook may suit Portuguese-speaking readers comparing its Premium plan at 24.90 BRL per month or Premium+ at 39.90 BRL per month. AudiobooksNow offers a paid alternative with a 4.99 USD per month club plan after a 30-day trial, including a discount on one audiobook each month and discounts on other eligible titles.

Verdict

Choose Bookmate if you are an individual reader who wants a multilingual book-and-audiobook catalog, personal EPUB or FB2 uploads, and offline listening in one service. Its mix of formats and reading tools is the clearest reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if the ongoing subscription price must be known upfront or one account needs to serve multiple people.
