Overview

Instead of following a grade-based sequence, Math-U-See offers 13 levels and asks students to master fundamentals before moving to new topics. That flexibility can help learners who need more time with a concept, but it puts more weight on choosing an appropriate level than a conventional grade progression does. An individual placement questionnaire uses yes-or-no questions and example problems to help identify a starting point.

The curriculum is used in homeschools, public and private schools, independent study, tutoring, and co-ops or support groups. More than 300 public school districts have implemented it, often in special education, resource, intervention, and Title 1 settings. Demme Learning, the independent, family-owned publisher, has served homeschoolers, parents, and small-group learning environments since 1990.

Key features

Build, Write, Say

Students model a problem with manipulatives, write a solution, and explain why the concept works. The sequence makes reasoning part of the lesson rather than treating a correct answer as the only goal. It is a strong fit for learners who benefit from concrete examples and explicit explanation; families seeking a predominantly screen-based course may prefer another format.

Digital resources

The Digital Toolbox includes the first three lessons of each level, virtual manipulatives, and other online content. The manipulatives cover concepts from number sense through Algebra 1, with a notepad and backgrounds such as graphing and number lines. The separate Math-U-See Digital Manipulatives app is designed only for tablets, so it is a poor fit if a phone or laptop is the intended device.

Essential, Expanded, and Premium subscriptions provide streaming instructional videos plus an online Instruction Manual and lesson solutions through a browser on a phone, laptop, tablet, or other browser-equipped device. Offline access is supported. The curriculum also includes lesson plans, assessments, and parent guidance, and is described as covering two subjects.

Pricing

The free account costs 0.00 USD per free and provides freemium content and samples of all program levels. It is useful for exploring the curriculum, but does not include the course-credit allotments of a paid subscription. A 14-day trial is also offered.

Each Individual plan covers 5 Student Account. Essential is the lower-cost option for households needing 2 Course Credits: 6.95 USD per month, or 70.00 USD per year. Expanded raises the allowance to 10 Course Credits for 19.95 USD per month or 199.95 USD per year. Premium costs 29.95 USD per month or 295.95 USD per year and includes Unlimited Course Credits, making it the fit for households expecting to use more than Expanded’s allotment.

Monthly Essential and Expanded subscribers pay $5/month for each additional Student Account and $5/month for each additional Course Credit. Monthly Premium lists an additional Student Account at $5/month. Annual Essential and Expanded list additional Student Accounts and Course Credits at $50/year each; annual Premium lists additional Student Accounts at $50/year. These plans keep the same five-student base, so larger groups should factor the added-seat cost into the choice.

Platforms

The curriculum lists Android, iOS, and web. Browser access to subscription videos and solutions gives families flexibility across browser-equipped devices, but the dedicated manipulatives app is tablet-only. Check compatibility before buying if the app is central to the plan.

Who it's for

Math-U-See is best suited to families, tutors, and schools that value mastery, manipulatives, and student explanation over fixed grade pacing. Its range through calculus and placement process make it adaptable across stages, while the included parent guidance supports home instruction. It is less suited to buyers who need a strictly grade-organized sequence or expect the manipulatives app to work on a phone or computer.

Pros and cons

Pros: Thirteen levels, self-paced progression, and placement questions give families a way to match instruction to a learner rather than a grade.
Pros: Digital resources complement textbooks, and browser-based subscriptions extend access to videos and lesson solutions beyond tablets.
Cons: The manipulatives app is tablet-only, limiting its usefulness on other devices.
Cons: Paid plans cap included student accounts at five; additional seats and, on some plans, course credits add recurring cost.
Cons: The curriculum is not grade-based, which may not suit families who want a conventional grade-level sequence.
