Overview

Song Cage is a songwriting workspace for building chords, melody and lyrics together. It suits writers who want theory-aware chord ideas and practical word tools, especially if they also work in a desktop DAW. Its free web plan is a useful one-song starting point; the $99 one-time licence is the route to an unlimited library and the fuller desktop and plugin workflow.

Key features

Chords, melody and lyrics

The chord palette reaches beyond basic diatonic choices to borrowed chords, secondary dominants, extensions and modulation routes. Suggestions are ranked against the melody and nearby chords, which makes the tool more useful for developing a progression in context than a static chord list. Melody tools, playback and audio recording round out the songwriting canvas.

The lyric workspace offers perfect and slant rhymes, synonyms, semantic suggestions and a verb/noun generator. Song Cage says it does not use AI to write songs: chord suggestions use music-theory rules and the word tools use dictionary lookups. That will suit writers who want structured prompts without generated lyrics, but it is not a song-generation tool.

Desktop and DAW workflow

The desktop app works offline, and the AU/VST3 plugin sends chord and melody MIDI in sync with DAW transport and saves songs inside the DAW project. It supports Logic Pro, GarageBand, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Cubase, Reaper and Studio One. Pro Tools users should look elsewhere if AAX support is essential; this version does not provide it.

The free iPhone and Android app is a capture companion, not a portable full editor. It stores voice memos, lyrics and chord ideas offline without an account, but has no full editor, timeline, export or DAW integration. That distinction matters for writers expecting to finish songs on a phone.

Pricing

The Free plan is free, requires no card, and allows one song in the web app. It includes the chord palette, voicings and modulation, word tools, playback, audio recording, song-file export and view-only share links. The one-song cap makes it suitable for trying the workflow or keeping a single active project, not maintaining a growing catalogue.

The Song Cage licence costs 99.00 USD per once. It adds unlimited songs, PDF chord sheets, MIDI export, Mac and Windows desktop apps, the AU/VST3 plugin, phone captures in the Ideas inbox, collaborators and web/desktop sync. The one-time price avoids a recurring subscription, but writers who only need occasional web use may not need those extras. A 14-day trial is offered, and purchases have a full refund within 30 days by email.

Platforms

Song Cage runs on web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, but the feature split is substantial. The native Mac app requires macOS 12 or later and supports Apple Silicon and Intel; Windows requires Windows 10 or later on 64-bit x64. Both desktop apps work offline. Mobile is limited to idea capture, while the web app provides the free one-song workspace.

Who it's for

Song Cage is a strong fit for songwriters who want chord exploration, lyric prompts and MIDI handoff in one workflow, particularly those using a supported DAW or needing offline desktop access. It is less suitable for writers who need a full mobile editor, a larger free song library, or Pro Tools AAX integration.

Its privacy terms say personal data is not sold, song content is not used to train AI models, and song content is excluded from diagnostic telemetry. The maker uses services including Supabase, Stripe and PayPal, Google OAuth, PowerSync, Datamuse, Cloudflare, Sentry and optional PostHog usage statistics. For dormant accounts without an active subscription or trial, cloud audio recordings and captured Ideas inbox items may be removed after 12 months of inactivity, with at least 30 days' warning; songs are excluded. Support is available through the contact form or support@songcage.com.

Pros and cons

Pros: Chord suggestions take melody and neighboring chords into account, making the palette useful for shaping progressions rather than merely browsing chord names.
Pros: A one-time licence unlocks desktop, plugin, collaboration and sync features alongside unlimited songs, without a recurring charge.
Pros: Offline desktop use and account-free offline mobile capture cover both focused work and quick idea collection.
Cons: The free web plan stops at one song, so it is restrictive for anyone building a library without upgrading.
Cons: The phone app cannot edit songs fully, export or connect to a DAW, limiting it to capture between writing sessions.
Cons: Pro Tools AAX is unsupported, which rules out the plugin workflow for AAX-dependent users.

Alternatives

Songwriting tools is the broader category for comparing other songwriting software.

Suno is the alternative to consider for mobile AI-generated audio: its free plan includes 50 credits per day and an 8-minute audio upload limit, while Pro is 8.00 USD per month.
Zoundroom suits collaborative project sharing across Android, iOS and web, with a free plan capped at two active projects and sharing with up to two artists.
Hookpad is a web alternative focused on chords and melody, with Smart Guides and unlimited cloud saves on its free plan; advanced features are limited to one-minute previews.
Nitesong is a web option for writers who want five notation editors, a keyboard, tuner and metronome on its free three-song plan.
SongScribe may suit writers looking for a low-cost lifetime upgrade: it supports iOS, macOS and web, with a free allowance of 10 songs and five recordings per song.
Songcraft is a web-based alternative with a free trial and a Pro plan at 5.00 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose Song Cage if you want a theory-aware songwriting canvas that can carry chord and melody ideas into a supported DAW, with an offline desktop app and a clear one-time upgrade. Look elsewhere if you need a full mobile editor, Pro Tools AAX, or more than one free song before committing.
