Overview

Boords is a web-based video preproduction tool that brings scriptwriting, storyboard creation, animatics and client approval together. It suits production teams that need clients to comment on work without joining the service. The workflow is its strongest case; costs rise quickly when a team needs more seats or AI images.

Key features

Scripts can be written in free-form, audio/visual or screenplay formats and turned into storyboard frames. Teams can make frames from original artwork, uploaded images or AI-generated images with consistent characters. That flexibility helps teams combine existing visual assets with generated ones, but AI use is capped monthly on every listed plan.

Boards can be timed to voiceover or music, then exported as MP4 animatics. Storyboards can be exported as PDF or image files, with DOCX, XLSX, Google Slides, Markdown and plain text also supported. Shared links let clients comment on individual frames, approve them or request changes without an account, keeping review within the production workflow.

Team collaboration, shot annotations and scene layouts support coordinated planning. A public API and signed webhooks offer integration options; Boords also lists Slack notifications, Dropbox and Google Drive. Boords says traffic uses HTTPS with 256-bit SSL and that files and backups are encrypted at rest. Its managed AWS and Heroku infrastructure is primarily in Ireland, EU. It is not SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certified. Customer content is not used to train its AI models, and account administrators can disable AI features.

Pricing

The free Solo plan is free and is for one user, with 250 AI images per month and unlimited storyboards and scripts. Boords' About page describes a five-active-storyboard and five-team-member ceiling for the free plan, so teams should treat those caps as practical limits even though the plan summary says unlimited storyboards.

Solo costs 26.00 USD per year, billed yearly, or 39.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It retains one user, 250 AI images per month and unlimited storyboards. This is the paid option for an individual who needs ongoing access, but not a team plan.

Pro costs 50.00 USD per year, billed yearly, or 75.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and supports up to five users with 1,000 AI images per month. Team costs 85.00 USD per year, billed yearly, or 125.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for up to 10 users, 2,000 AI images per month and advanced team controls. These plans suit small groups needing shared capacity; Team adds controls, while Pro keeps the lower seat and image limits.

Agency costs 165.00 USD per year, billed yearly, or 250.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It raises the cap to 30 users and 3,000 AI images per month and includes priority support, making it the fit for larger agency teams that need a larger allowance. Enterprise has custom pricing and billing terms, custom seat counts and AI credit pools, dedicated support and onboarding, and SAML single sign-on. A free trial is available.

Platforms

Boords runs on the web and also supports an API.

Who it's for

Boords is aimed at video and advertising agencies, creative directors, production managers, in-house brand teams and animation studios. It is a strong fit where script-to-board planning and client sign-off need to sit together. A solo creator or team that does not need review links, animatics or the broader workflow may find its higher-tier team pricing hard to justify.

Pros and cons

Pro: Script formats convert into storyboard frames, connecting written planning to visual work.
Pro: Client review links permit frame-level comments and sign-off without requiring client accounts.
Pro: Storyboard, document, presentation and video export formats accommodate different handoffs.
Con: Solo is limited to one user, and even Agency caps teams at 30; larger organizations need custom Enterprise terms.
Con: AI-image allowances range from 250 to 3,000 monthly on the listed plans, which may constrain teams that rely heavily on generated imagery.
Con: Boords is not SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certified, a relevant drawback for buyers whose procurement requires either certification.

Alternatives

AI Storyboard Generators and Storyboard Software are broader starting points for comparing tools in those categories.

Choose Krock.io if you want a free plan with a stated 2 GB storage allowance, one workspace and two projects, or its $10.00 USD per month Pro plan. Drawstory is another freemium web option. Cygnus is a freemium choice for macOS and web. GOGUL, Shai, Story2Board, StoryBirdie and Storyboarder.ai are also alternatives; their stated plans focus on different free allowances, credits, or trial limits.

Verdict

Choose Boords if a video or creative team needs scripts, boards, animatics and client approval in one web workflow, especially when account-free client review matters. Look elsewhere if your team needs formal SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification, a larger standard seat allocation, or a lower-cost tool for storyboard creation alone.
