In their own words
Breadbin466
Breadbin466 is a free Commodore 64 emulator written in Rust, focused on modeling one PAL Assy 250466 machine. Its cycle-driven emulation covers the MOS 6510 CPU and VIC-II video timing and generation, including bus arbitration. The SID sound model draws on a physical datecode 2286 chip and models oscillator, DAC, mixing, and filter behavior. Its Commodore 1541 drive emulation includes a separate CPU, VIAs, mechanics, GCR read channel, IEC communication, fastloaders, and protected-disk behavior. Other modeled hardware includes CIA interfaces, a 1351 proportional mouse, a Datassette with TAP playback and recording, cartridges, and a 512 KB REU. It supports D64, G64, NIB, NBZ, and D7Z disk images, with tools for image creation, conversion, and space reclamation. The integrated debugger provides breakpoints, disassembly, history, and configurable tracing. Native menus and Inspector windows are provided on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Version 0.99.0 is described as feature-complete, with broader testing still remaining before 1.0.
VirtualC64
VirtualC64 turns an Apple Macintosh into a Commodore 64 emulator, supporting PAL and NTSC systems with emphasis on PAL accuracy and cycle-accurate emulation. It includes a built-in debugger and supports the PAL C64, NTSC C64, C64 II PAL, and C64 II NTSC variants. Media formats include D64, T64, PRG, P00, G64, TAP, and CRT. Joystick input can come from the keyboard or an external USB device; named options include Sony DualShock 4 controllers and the RetroFun! USB adapter for original Commodore joysticks. VirtualC64 is free and open source under the GNU General Public License, while its CPU core uses the MIT license. The core is designed for WebAssembly and can run in a browser, although macOS is the listed supported platform. On first launch, users are prompted to add four ROM images, which are not pre-installed because their copyright status is unclear. Recent versions include free ROM replacements from the Mega65 project, installable through the ROM configuration panel.
