Overview

Brex brings spending rules, budgets, expenses, reimbursements and accounting workflows into one platform. Its mobile app covers expense tracking, travel booking and management, spend-limit requests and payments, making it relevant to teams whose employees need to manage spending on the move as well as to finance teams overseeing it.

The range is broad, but the plans differ materially in entity coverage. Essentials supports up to two entities, including one global entity, while Enterprise allows unlimited US or global entities. That distinction matters more to a multi-entity company than the headline free entry point.

Key features

Spend controls and budgets

Policies can be tailored to use case, level, department or entity, with specified merchants or categories blocked or routed for approval. That gives finance teams a way to prevent some out-of-policy spending rather than relying entirely on later expense review. Live Budgets lets department heads allocate funds to individuals or teams and monitor usage in real time; Brex AI can flag anomalous activity. These controls suit organizations that want department-level visibility, though the Essentials entity cap can limit their reach in more complex structures.

Expense and accounting automation

Brex can collect documents, create memos, fill fields, assign departments and general-ledger codes, and match receipts with OCR across languages and currencies. This targets repetitive expense work, particularly for teams handling varied currencies. QuickBooks and NetSuite are named ERP integrations, and accounting automation can suggest GL coding rules and mappings. Brex also offers thousands of native integrations, including Slack, Rippling, Workday and Xero; some integrations may be add-ons.

Reimbursements, cards and security

Employees can receive reimbursements in local currency to bank accounts in 40 countries, with no per-transaction reimbursement fees. Brex supports corporate cards and card issuance, and its Smart Card plan offers local-currency cards in 50+ countries. Its stated security measures include SOC 1 Type II, SOC 2 Type II and PCI-DSS compliance, encryption, two-factor authentication and fraud monitoring. Brex says fraud protection includes 24/7 support, reached through the dashboard or mobile app.

Pricing

Brex has a freemium model, with paid plans from $12/user/mo. Essentials costs 0.00 USD per month, billed $0 user/month, and includes up to two entities (one global entity) and one local card program. It is the sensible starting point for a small organization that fits those boundaries; it is not a fit for a company needing broader entity coverage.

Premium costs 12.00 USD per month, billed $12 user/month, and supports multi-entity operations in the US and internationally. That makes it the step up for teams that have outgrown Essentials' entity limit. Enterprise has custom pricing and unlimited US or global entities, which is the plan to consider when entity scale is the priority.

Smart Card also has custom pricing and provides local-currency cards in 50+ countries. Some integrations may be add-ons, so organizations relying on particular connectors should account for that when comparing plan costs. The listed plans do not state seat quotas, trial terms or renewal conditions.

Platforms

Brex supports web, iOS and Android, as well as an API. The mobile apps cover expense tracking, travel booking and management, spending-limit requests and payments, while the API provides an option for organizations integrating programmatically.

Who it's for

Brex is aimed at startups, scaled companies and ecommerce brands, including founders, CFOs and finance teams. It is a stronger match for organizations that want controls, budgets, reimbursements and accounting workflows together, especially across multiple currencies. Companies that need more than two entities should compare Premium or Enterprise rather than assume Essentials will scale with them.

Pros and cons

Pros: Configurable rules can block or require approval for specified merchants and categories, giving finance teams preventive controls.
Pros: Automated document handling and receipt matching across languages and currencies can reduce routine expense administration.
Pros: Reimbursements to local bank accounts in 40 countries carry no per-transaction fee.
Cons: Essentials is limited to two entities, including only one global entity, which can be restrictive for organizations with more complex structures.
Cons: Enterprise and Smart Card use custom pricing, and some integrations may be add-ons, making the total cost less straightforward to assess.

Verdict

Choose Brex if your startup or growing finance team wants configurable spending controls, automated expenses and accounting integrations in one platform, and its entity tiers fit your structure. Look elsewhere if a two-entity free plan is too restrictive or you need predictable costs for Enterprise-level coverage and add-on integrations.
