In their own words
Burkmak
Burkmak is a free, MIT-licensed, self-hosted read-it-later application for saving links, reading articles, highlighting passages, syncing with Kobo, and exporting notes to Obsidian. Its reader extracts articles into a clean view with highlights and notes, while tags, read states, favorites, and search organize per-user libraries. Links can be captured through the web app, Android share sheet, or desktop browser bookmarklet. Kobo support provides an OPDS catalog for EPUB and KEPUB downloads plus native store-protocol synchronization that writes reading state back. An Obsidian plugin transfers article notes, highlights, and metadata through Burkmak’s export API. Docker Compose deployment includes backend and web containers, a data volume, and amd64 and arm64 images; the volume stores the SQLite database, cached articles, images, and EPUBs. Product requirements state that server-fetched content remains on the self-hosted instance and no third-party analytics are used. Native Kobo synchronization requires HTTPS, physical-device support remains pending, and the architecture targets one instance rather than horizontal scaling or high availability.
Linkpack
Linkpack is a tool for saving, reading, organizing, and sharing links. Links can be captured through the iOS app, Chrome or Firefox extensions, or by dragging and dropping them into the filesystem. Linkpack says saved links stay synchronized between the app and the user’s Dropbox folder. Users can group links into Linkpacks and track reading progress, while narration supports hands-free reading. Each Linkpack can receive a unique URL for sharing or embedding in a blog. The service lists Free and Linkpack PRO plans, but no plan prices are provided. It is available through extensions and iOS. Linkpack was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Thessaloniki, Greece. Its terms limit use to people aged 18 or older. The privacy policy says personal information is not transferred, sold, or rented to third parties for marketing. Sharing a Dropbox folder involves collecting file internet addresses, creation dates, the user’s full name, and OAuth credentials used to download the folder’s files.
