Overview

OBS Studio is free, open-source desktop software for recording video and producing live streams. The trade-off is clear: it offers substantial production control at no cost, but it does not multistream.

Key features

Scene-based production

Build scenes from windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams and capture cards, then switch among as many scenes as needed. Custom transitions, including user-provided stinger videos, make it possible to prepare distinct layouts for different parts of a production. Studio Mode lets you preview scenes and sources before taking them live, while Multiview monitors up to eight scenes. Hotkeys cover many actions, including recording and stream controls. These tools suit deliberate, operator-led productions; they are less compelling if you want a simple browser workflow.

Audio and extensions

The mixer applies filters per source, including noise gate, noise suppression and gain, and supports VST plugins. An API, native plugins and Lua or Python scripts provide room to customize the software or add functionality. That flexibility benefits users willing to configure a production setup, but it is more than casual recording may require.

Streaming and recording

OBS supports video recording and live streaming, uses an encoder as its primary stream mode, and supports scheduling and looping or replaying streams. It can capture at up to 4K and works with popular streaming services, including Twitch and YouTube. Streams connect directly from the computer to the streaming service rather than passing through OBS servers. Multistreaming is not supported, so creators who need to send one production to several destinations should look elsewhere.

Pricing

OBS Studio costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan has no watermarks or usage limitations and can be used commercially. There is no paid tier or free trial to weigh against it. The software is open source under GPLv2; commercial use is permitted subject to the license terms. That makes it a strong fit for individuals and organizations seeking capable production tools without a subscription, provided they are comfortable managing their own setup.

Platforms

OBS Studio is desktop software for Windows, macOS and Linux, not a browser-based studio. It supports Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 12.0 or newer. The download guidance also specifies macOS 13.0 or newer, so users should check compatibility for their particular download. Linux distribution is through Flathub and an Ubuntu 24.04-or-newer PPA. A compatible computer and supported system are required; mobile platforms are not supported.

Who it's for

Choose OBS if you want flexible scene composition, per-source audio controls and extensive customization for recording or live streaming, and are prepared to run desktop software. It is particularly suitable for productions that benefit from previews, hotkeys and monitoring several scenes. It is a poor fit for browser-only workflows or multistreaming, and its customization options may be unnecessary for basic capture.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited scenes, preview mode and eight-scene Multiview support flexible live production.
Pro: Per-source audio filters, VST support and scriptable extensions offer meaningful control over audio and workflow.
Pro: The free plan has no watermarks or usage limitations and permits commercial use under GPLv2 terms.
Con: It does not support multistreaming, limiting creators who need to broadcast to multiple destinations at once.
Con: It is desktop-only, so users seeking a browser studio or mobile workflow need another option.
