Overview

CafeTran combines document translation, translation memory and glossary tools in an application for Linux, macOS and Windows. The maker positions it for freelance work while also pointing to capabilities for large translation memories and complex formats. That range makes it a plausible fit for an independent translator whose projects are growing, as well as teams that want a shared translation-memory resource.

Key features

Office and publishing formats sit alongside bilingual formats such as XLIFF, SDLXLIFF, SDLPPX, MQXLIFF and TXML. CafeTran says translators can take jobs from clients using SDL Trados, MemoQ, Wordfast and other major CAT tools, an advantage when work arrives in different ecosystems. The standard version can also act as a translation-memory server for team collaboration, extending its usefulness beyond a solo desktop workflow.

AI and machine-translation integration, smart autocompletion and one-click placement of suggested text target repetitive work. The customizable interface gives translators room to adapt their workspace. A clipboard-based workflow helps with PDFs and other difficult formats, though it is a workaround rather than a promise of native handling for every awkward document.

The free copy runs indefinitely, but its translation memories are limited to 1,000 translation units in total and glossaries to 500 terms. Those caps can be workable for trying the workflow or smaller jobs, but translators with established or expanding resources will likely need a paid option.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free	Free	Indefinite use, with 1,000 translation units across translation memories and 500 glossary terms total.
Annual Subscription	80.00 EUR per year	No translation-memory or glossary size limits for the subscription year, latest-version updates and full support while payments remain current. Payment is processed automatically.
One-time Purchase	200.00 EUR per month	Four years of upgrades and support.

Free suits limited resource needs; the annual subscription is the clearest step up for translators who need larger memories or glossaries and want current updates and support. Its benefits last while payments stay current, so it is not a one-off fee. The one-time purchase includes four years of upgrades and support, but the stated price is 200.00 EUR per month, a term that makes it important to check the licensing terms before committing.

License files are generated for a specific computer, and buyers may request a file for a second computer. Sales are final because issued license files cannot be invalidated, so the lack of a refund path raises the stakes of choosing the right option and computer.

Platforms

CafeTran runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. That desktop coverage is useful for translators choosing among the three major desktop systems, though it is not a web-first option.

Who it's for

Freelancers working across client formats are the natural audience: bilingual file support can reduce friction when clients use other CAT tools, while translation memories and glossaries support recurring terminology. The standard version's server role can also suit teams that need collaboration around shared translation memory. It is less attractive to users who need uncapped resources at no cost or a refund if the purchase proves unsuitable.

Pros and cons

Pros: Runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, and supports a broad set of office, publishing and bilingual formats, helping accommodate varied client workflows.
Pros: The annual plan removes memory and glossary caps and includes updates and support while current, giving resource-intensive users a defined upgrade path.
Pros: A standard-version translation-memory server and clipboard-based PDF workflow cover collaboration and difficult documents beyond straightforward file translation.
Cons: The free plan's 1,000-unit and 500-term limits can constrain ongoing projects as translation resources grow.
Cons: Computer-specific license files and final sales make purchase decisions less flexible; the second-computer request does not make the license automatically portable.
Cons: The license agreement disclaims guarantees of security, error-free operation and uninterrupted service, leaving users responsible for assessing their security requirements.

The privacy policy says customer information is collected to process orders, kept confidential and not shared. Support includes a knowledge base, official forum and tickets, and is often provided personally by developer Igor Kmitowski, a useful point of contact for buyers who value direct help.

Alternatives

Computer-Assisted Translation Software and Translation Software are broader directories for comparing options. For a hosted, paid team product, XTM Cloud may fit buyers seeking a web and mobile-capable service with unlimited users and a stated annual word allowance, rather than CafeTran's desktop workflow. Déjà Vu X3 is a Windows alternative with a free edition for standalone and satellite projects prepared with its Workgroup product. TextUnited may suit users who prefer a web/API service and a free tier with monthly word and PDF-page allowances for one user. Verto is another web option, with a free plan capped by active projects, one user, TM segments, term-base entries and monthly processed words. ApSIC Xbench is worth considering for Windows users seeking terminology checking, though its free 2.9 edition is non-Unicode freeware with frozen development. locAGI may appeal to teams considering a platform with unlimited seats and separately billed AI. BasicCAT is a free, open-source CAT tool for Linux, macOS and Windows. Lokalize is a free KDE option for those who prefer free, open-source software on those same desktop platforms.

Verdict

CafeTran Espresso is a strong candidate for freelancers who need broad bilingual-format compatibility, desktop choice and a path to larger translation resources; its standard-version server capability also gives teams a reason to consider it. Choose it if those workflow strengths outweigh the free tier's small caps and the final-sale, computer-specific licensing terms. Look elsewhere if you need a refund option, uncapped free use or a web-first workflow.
