In their own words
Calibre-Web
Calibre-Web is a web app for browsing, reading, and downloading eBooks stored in a Calibre database. Its library tools include advanced search and filtering, custom shelves, metadata editing, and plugin-based metadata downloads. It supports in-browser reading for multiple formats and accepts uploads in various formats, including audio. An OPDS feed lets reader apps access the library, and a one-click option sends eBooks to e-readers. Kobo devices can sync with the library when the optional Kepubify tool is installed. Administrators can manage users and per-user permissions, restrict downloads for logged-in users, allow public registration, and hide content by category. Authentication options include LDAP, Google and GitHub OAuth, and proxy authentication. The project is GPL v3 licensed and free. Supported platforms are web, Windows, macOS, Linux, and self-hosted deployments. The README recommends pip installation in a Python virtual environment and also links to pre-built LinuxServer Docker images for x64 and aarch64.
MapleRead
MapleRead is an iOS e-book reader family with CX, CE, and SE editions. Its EPUB reader offers adjustable styles, layouts, themes, and fonts. It can generate pseudo audiobooks using narrator voices in over 40 languages and supports synchronized immersion reading. Readers can look up words, translate sentences, save vocabulary, highlight passages, and add notes. Books can be organized with sets and tags, and their metadata can be edited.
All editions read DRM-free, password-free EPUB files; SE also reads DRM-free, password-free PDFs. MapleRead works with Calibre and supports importing or transferring books through OPDS, HTML, PC Upload, iTunes, and AirDrop. Cloud sync covers reading positions, notes, vocabulary, bookmarks, and book-set membership, but not book files; synced data can be viewed in a browser on desktop or mobile. CX is free to try with limitations and in-app purchases. CE costs 6.99 USD once, SE costs 8.99 USD once, and the SE-CE bundle costs 10.49 USD once.
