Canvas Intelligent Insights vs DHIS2-Ed

Canvas Intelligent Insights is a web analytics product for institutions evaluating courses, educational technology, and student progress. Ask Your Data lets account administrators submit natural-language questions through an AI-powered query tool. Course Readiness supports custom criteria for assessing course readiness and effectiveness, while Students in Need of Attention monitors institution-defined indicators for learners who may need support. Users can visualize data, customize dashboards, share curated insights, and return SQL queries. Listed capabilities include Accessibility Insights, Accessibility Analytics, predictive analytics, and learner risk scoring. Intelligent Insights integrates with Canvas through the Canvas Analytics Hub. It reports on LTI tool usage, although Instructure later stated that LTI reporting would become part of core Canvas. Instructure describes the product as a legacy add-on: advanced analytics are now available in Canvas Plus and Canvas Next, and AI-powered Insights are available in Canvas Next. Pricing is on request. DHIS2-Ed is an education management information system for collecting, analyzing, visualizing, and using data from educational institutions. Its SEMIS app manages student, staff, and school records, including attendance, student progress, and staff registration. Attendance can be handled on the web or Android, online or offline. The Education Toolkit supplies customizable annual school census forms, standardized data collection metadata, dashboards, and analysis modules. Users can examine data with maps, charts, tables, and reports, including pre-configured SDG4 and CESA dashboards. The platform can exchange data with public health programs and other DHIS2 sectors, and connect to existing software and data sources. Country-specific forms and tools can be built as custom applications, while SEMIS can be extended with features such as payroll or timetable scheduling. It is free and open-source, but requires a secure central server, computers and/or Android devices, and periodic internet connectivity for uploads. HISP groups support implementation and staff capacity building.
