Overview

Terminal49 combines container tracking, document handling and workflow automation across ocean, rail and road. It draws visibility data from carriers, terminals, vessel/AIS sources and intermodal rail, giving teams a common view across transport handoffs. Updates are described as hourly, so it may fall short for operations that depend on more frequent location refreshes.

The API supplies standardized JSON milestones for vessel events, container moves, holds, fees and Last Free Day information. Webhooks can pass status changes to connected systems, while automatic document classification links files to the relevant container. That combination can reduce manual handoffs between tracking, document and operational systems.

Key features

Tracking and milestones: Coverage across carriers, terminals, vessels/AIS and intermodal rail helps teams follow shipments across modes. Exception alerts and ETA predictions can support earlier intervention, though hourly updates may limit their usefulness for decisions requiring near-continuous location data.
Documents: Automatic classification and container linking help keep shipment paperwork with the movement it concerns. Document credits are capped on the Free and Lite plans, which matters for teams processing more than a small volume.
API and integrations: Webhooks, standardized JSON and developer documentation with code samples suit teams building shipment events into their own software. Integrations and data flows include Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Microsoft SQL Server, Google Sheets, Excel, NetSuite, SAP, Descartes, CargoWise, Power BI and Azure.
Workflows and security: Complete adds automated workflows and custom reports. The integrations page states that data transfers are encrypted and that Terminal49 is SOC 2 compliant.

Pricing

Terminal49 uses a freemium model, with a Free plan at Free forever. It allows up to 10 active containers at a time and up to 3 users, with shipment tracking and details, basic notifications and 50 document credits. It is a practical starting point for a small operation, but the container and seat ceilings make it unsuitable as a growing team’s long-term plan.

Lite uses an annual contract, with price by request. It offers unlimited users, full shipment and container dashboards, 50 document credits with more available to buy, and planning and performance reporting. It removes the Free plan’s user ceiling and adds reporting, but the included document allowance remains limited.

Complete is annual contract pricing by demo. It adds predictive ETAs, port congestion insights, automated workflows, custom reports, advanced integration add-ons, a dedicated customer success manager, a shared Slack channel, and SLA-backed uptime and data guarantees. It is the best fit for teams needing operational automation and service commitments, though the annual term and demo-based pricing require a larger buying decision.

Essential uses an annual contract or pay-as-you-go arrangement, with price by demo. It includes API access and webhooks, intermodal rail tracking, container assignments and team collaboration, plus document processing credits. Teams evaluating an integration can use the API page’s 7-day free trial, which provides full API access to build and test; the broader pricing note also gives a 14-day trial.

Platforms

Terminal49 runs on web and through its API. Its transport coverage spans ocean, rail and road, with intermodal rail tracking included in Essential. Teams looking for a mobile app should consider that this product’s stated platforms are web and API.

Who it's for

Terminal49 names cargo owners, importers, exporters, freight forwarders, customs brokers, 3PLs and logistics technology companies as its audience. It is strongest for organizations that need container visibility tied to documents, milestone alerts or downstream systems. A small team can begin on Free; teams that need broader access, API workflows or service guarantees will need to weigh the paid plans and their contract terms.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multi-source, multimodal tracking and shipment milestones provide a broad operational picture; API webhooks and integrations can connect those events to business and analytics systems; automatic document classification links paperwork to containers.
Cons: Hourly tracking updates may be too slow for workflows needing frequent location refreshes; Free is capped at 10 active containers and 3 users; paid plans use annual contracts or demo-based pricing, limiting budget certainty before a sales conversation.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist, compare Transportation Visibility Software and Container Tracking Software. Choose Tive Platform if its Android and iOS apps, CSV shipment creation, multi-tracker shipments or geofence alerts better match your operation. GEGO Tracking Solutions is a paid option with one-time business packages at 99.00 USD and 299.99 USD; consider it when those packaged terms suit better than Terminal49’s annual or demo-priced plans. Portcast may fit teams seeking a paid predictive visibility platform, with its Enterprise plan priced at 45000.00 USD per year on a 12-month contract, plus possible AWS infrastructure costs. Shippeo is another paid platform for businesses exploring shipment visibility. GoComet is a paid option with a free plan. ShipsGo offers a free plan and trial, as well as pay-as-you-track pricing at 1000.00 USD per once for 500 credits valid for 1 year, with 1 credit per new shipment tracking. FourKites Dynamic Yard is an alternative with Android, iOS and web platforms. Flexport Control Tower is another paid API and web platform.

Verdict

Terminal49 is a strong choice for cargo owners and logistics teams that want container tracking, documents, milestone data and integrations in one operating layer. Its API and workflow features are the main reason to choose it; look elsewhere if hourly updates are too infrequent or if your team needs firm, upfront prices for expansion.
