Overview

Cubism Editor builds a movable model from an illustration, then uses motion parameters and deformation to animate it. Physics and lip-sync provide additional ways to shape movement and expression. Live2D says the technology is used in mobile apps, console games, VTuber streaming and animation, so it is aimed squarely at drawn-character work rather than general-purpose animation.

Export choices span still images, video and Live2D model data: PNG, JPEG, GIF, MP4, WebM, MOV, MOC3, model3.json and motion3.json. Cubism files are supported by nizima LIVE and third-party applications. An After Effects plug-in, Photoshop scripts and external-app integration provide routes into other workflows; the integration can let connected applications set and retrieve model parameter values.

External connections carry a security consideration: Live2D warns that enabling remote connections may expose the user to malicious attacks over the Internet. Live2D also reports a vulnerability in older Editor or Viewer versions that could crash when malformed MOC3 files are loaded, and provides a consistency checker for files.

Key features

Illustration-to-puppet animation: Mesh deformation and motion parameters let artists animate drawn characters while working from the original artwork. This is the central reason to choose Cubism over a tool aimed at other animation workflows.
Expressive motion: Physics and lip-sync features support more than manually posed movement, which suits characters intended to speak or react.
Multiple output types: Still and video formats sit alongside model and motion data formats, useful for both rendered clips and application-oriented workflows.
External integrations: nizima LIVE support, third-party app compatibility, the After Effects plug-in, Photoshop scripts and parameter access broaden where a model can be used. Remote access should be enabled with the stated security warning in mind.
SDK ecosystem: SDKs are offered for Unity, Native, Web, Java, Unreal Engine and Cocos Creator, with platform support varying by SDK. The SDK download has no initial cost, but release licensing is separate and is not included with PRO for business.
Learning material: Manuals, tutorials, sample data and Live2D Help give users resources for learning the editor and its workflows.

Pricing

Cubism is freemium: the PRO trial lasts 42 days, after which the Editor continues as the FREE version. FREE allows one texture file up to 2048 px, 100 ArtMesh, 30 motion parameters, 50 deformers and 30 parts. Exceeding those limits prevents saving, a consequential restriction for a growing model rather than a minor feature downgrade.

FREE commercial use is limited to General Users and Small-Scale Enterprises with annual sales under 10 million yen. Other users are limited to non-commercial or supervision purposes. That makes the free tier a plausible way to learn or develop within its caps, but not a safe assumption for commercial use by every organization.

Cubism PRO for indie has a flexible month-by-month plan at 13.26 USD per month. Annual billing is 91.02 USD per year in year one, 74.96 USD per year in year two, and 68.07 USD per year from year three onward; annual subscriptions cannot be cancelled during their subscription period. A 3-year plan is 234.05 USD per month and is non-renewable. The indie tier is the relevant paid route for general users and small-scale enterprises under the stated 10 million yen annual-sales threshold.

Cubism PRO for business is aimed at medium or large businesses. Its flexible monthly plan is 61.32 USD per month; annual billing is 420.68 USD per year in year one, 380.91 USD per year in year two, and 350.32 USD per year from year three onward. Annual subscriptions cannot be cancelled during the subscription period. Businesses should also budget separately for SDK release licensing, which is not included with PRO for business.

The lower-cost choice is not just a matter of monthly versus annual billing: FREE has hard save-blocking model limits and narrower commercial eligibility, while annual paid plans commit users for the subscription year. Choose the monthly option for flexibility, or an annual option only if its renewal commitment and intended use suit the project.

Platforms

Cubism Editor downloads are offered for Windows and macOS, including Apple Silicon and Intel Mac versions. The broader platform list includes Android, iOS and web, but those should not be confused with editor downloads: Live2D’s SDKs cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and WebGL depending on the SDK.

Who it's for

Cubism is best suited to illustrators, character artists and developers who need to animate drawn 2D characters for streaming, games, apps or animation. Its integrations and SDK options are useful when models must move between creative tools and an application pipeline. It is a weaker fit for people seeking a broadly applicable animation editor, or for users whose model will exceed FREE limits but who cannot take on a paid plan.

Pros and cons

Pro: The combination of mesh deformation, puppet animation, physics and lip-sync is specifically suited to expressive illustrated characters.
Pro: Still, video and model-data exports, plus SDKs and app integrations, support both rendered output and connected character workflows.
Pro: A 42-day PRO trial falls back to a continuing FREE editor rather than ending access altogether.
Con: FREE has explicit caps on texture size and model components, and crossing them prevents saving.
Con: FREE commercial use is restricted by user category and annual sales, so some organizations cannot use it commercially under that tier.
Con: The business PRO subscription does not include SDK release licensing, adding a separate licensing consideration for shipped products.
Con: Annual plans cannot be cancelled within the subscription period, and remote external-app connections have a stated security risk.

Alternatives

Consider Rive if a free, collaborative editor is a better match: its Free plan includes three collaborative files and one project, and it supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows.

Effekseer is a free, open-source alternative for readers who prioritize those terms. LibreSprite is another free, open-source option, under GNU General Public License Version 2. SkelForm offers a free and open-source 2D skeletal animator.

Choose Spine if a paid tool with an Essential plan at 99.00 USD per month and exports to every supported format better suits the project. Spriter has a free version with PNG and spritesheet animation and basic animation features, with a one-user Spriter Pro license at 59.99 USD per month. SpineBones may suit a macOS or Windows user seeking a free tool with a 300-frame timeline, playback up to 120 FPS and WebM, PNG-sequence and sprite-sheet exports. Creature is a Windows-only paid alternative with a trial whose export functions are disabled.

Verdict

Choose Live2D Cubism if your work starts with drawn characters and needs expressive puppet-style animation, with exports and integrations for downstream use. The FREE editor and 42-day PRO trial lower the barrier to learning it, but the save-blocking caps and narrow commercial-use eligibility can rule out the free tier for production. Look elsewhere if you need a different animation workflow, broader free-tier headroom or business SDK release licensing included in the subscription.
