In their own words
CATMA
CATMA is a free tool for computer-assisted text markup and analysis, designed for qualitative text studies, especially literary studies. Users can upload corpora, share projects, create tagsets, and apply overlapping annotations. Work can be exploratory or taxonomy-based, qualitative or quantitative, and individual or collaborative. Its Analyze module provides interactive visualizations such as word clouds, distribution graphs, and Double Tree. The web application runs in common browsers on macOS, Windows, or Linux and needs a stable internet connection. CATMA Standalone can run on a local machine or private network, including settings without internet access. Projects can be exported as text, TEI-XML, or CSV; data is also accessible through Git, the GitMA Python package, or the JSON API. The hosted service stores data in Germany and makes automatic backups at least daily. CATMA says its server data is not encrypted at rest, though off-site backups are encrypted, and advises against uploading sensitive data. Standalone defaults to single-user use; some features need additional configuration or are unavailable.
Leximancer
Leximancer analyzes collections of text and presents extracted information as concept maps for thematic analysis. It automatically identifies high-level concepts and provides interactive visualizations and data exports, with discovery and guided exploration modes that do not depend on user-defined dictionaries or phrase libraries. Topic Guide creates a subject index for a document collection without configuration. Listed applications include document processing, stakeholder and customer feedback, survey responses, media analysis, and social networks. Leximancer supports sentiment and topic analysis in 18 languages. LexiDesktop runs on macOS 10.15 or later and 64-bit Windows 10 and 11; LexiPortal provides a cloud option without installation on the user's computer. The service has a 30-day trial but no free plan. LexiPortal Monthly Subscription costs A$350 a month and includes 15GB project and document storage. Academic subscriptions and desktop licences have separate prices and eligibility terms; academic licences are restricted to non-commercial use by individual academics and enrolled students at recognized learning institutions. LexiPortal uses US-based service providers, and personal information may be disclosed to them.
