Overview

Cecil builds sites from Markdown pages with front matter, media, and Twig templates. Content stays in flat files, while Twig and theme support give makers room to shape the presentation. This suits file-based publishing, but it means building and editing through a command-line workflow rather than a hosted site editor.

The published output is static: visits require neither a database nor server-side script execution. That reduces the operational components of the finished site and avoids vulnerabilities associated with dynamic PHP at request time. Cecil also generates pagination, sitemaps, redirects, robots.txt, taxonomies, and RSS, covering common publishing needs without requiring each to be assembled separately.

Key features

Incremental builds and a local preview server support iterative work. Multilingual content localization and template translation make Cecil a reasonable fit for sites that publish in more than one language. Image handling is another strength: it can generate responsive WebP and AVIF images and compress them, helping reduce image weight. SEO helpers generate Open Graph tags, Twitter cards, and structured data.

Starter kits for a blog, a Linktree alternative, a self-hosted photo stream, and a documentation site provide starting structures for different kinds of projects. They do not change the underlying file-based, command-line workflow, so they are most useful to people who are comfortable building and maintaining a site that way.

Pricing

Cecil is free software under the EUPL-1.2 license. The Free software plan is free, and no cost or usage limits are stated. There is no free trial because the software is free to use. This is a strong fit for individuals and teams that want a static-site generator without a software charge, though they should still account for the PHP requirement and their own build and hosting arrangements.

Platforms

Cecil supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, with PHP 8.2 or later required. Installation is documented through Homebrew on macOS, Scoop on Windows, and a downloaded PHAR file on Linux; PHIVE and manual installation are also supported. Deployment recipes cover Netlify, Vercel, statichost, GitHub Pages, GitLab CI, and Surge. Cloudflare Pages and Render no longer support PHP, so they are not suitable deployment choices for Cecil's documented workflow.

Who it's for

Cecil is aimed at creators who treat performance as a technical priority but still want design flexibility. It is a good choice for developers, documentation authors, and publishers comfortable with Markdown, Twig, PHP, and command-line builds. It is not the right fit for someone who wants a managed publishing service or an editor that avoids local tooling and build requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros: Static output avoids a database and server-side execution for site visitors, reducing hosting complexity and dynamic-PHP exposure.
Pros: Responsive WebP and AVIF generation, compression, and SEO helpers cover useful performance and publishing tasks.
Pros: Incremental builds, local preview, localization, and automatic publishing outputs support a capable editorial workflow.
Cons: PHP 8.2 or later is required, which adds a build-environment dependency some static-site workflows avoid.
Cons: The command-line, file-based model is unsuitable for teams seeking a hosted visual editing experience.
Cons: Cloudflare Pages and Render no longer support PHP, narrowing deployment choices for users committed to those platforms.

Verdict

Choose Cecil if you want a free, customizable static-site workflow with image optimization, localization, and publishing automation, and are comfortable building with PHP and the command line. Its static output is the central advantage; its PHP 8.2 requirement and platform limitations are the reasons to choose another generator.
