Overview

Forio combines ready-made business simulations, a developer platform for building learning experiences, and custom simulation development. It suits educators and learning teams that want learners to practice in interactive scenarios; its breadth is the chief advantage, while the free Epicenter tier cannot authenticate end users.

Founded in 2001, Forio focuses on strategy scenarios and supports multiplayer use, assessment, instructor dashboards, advanced customization, and hybrid deployment. Buyers can choose a packaged simulation, build with Epicenter, or work with Forio on a tailored product—three distinct routes that make the offering flexible, but mean there is no single plan or workflow for every customer.

Key features

Build and deploy with Epicenter

Epicenter is a developer-grade platform for model-driven learning simulations, with cohort management and secure deployment. It supports Python, R, and Julia models as well as Vensim and Stella, and offers Flow.js, Epicenter.js, and REST APIs. That range is a strong fit for technical teams adapting existing models or connecting their own software; it is more machinery than a buyer needs when the goal is simply to run a ready-made exercise.

Epicenter can connect to LLMs and AI libraries through Python or APIs. Forio describes OAuth 2.0 security, role-based project access, and cloud or on-premises deployment. Customers can host a project's user interface on their own web server while the project uses Epicenter APIs, which gives organizations a hybrid deployment option. SAML/LTI authentication appears on applicable plans, so buyers should match that requirement to a tier before choosing.

Ready-made, custom, and facilitated learning

Ready-Made simulations cover business learning topics and support individual, team-based, and asynchronous formats. They are the more direct choice for organizations that want a business simulation library without building one. Forio also develops tailored simulations with customers, who own the resulting intellectual property; that route offers a purpose-built experience, but requires a sales conversation rather than a standard self-serve purchase.

Performer lets teams create branded role-play learning experiences with scoring criteria and facilitator dashboards, plus AI feedback for select exercises. Those tools make it relevant to organizations running facilitated practice, though the listed Business tier is capped at 50 users and carries a separate setup and training fee.

Pricing

Epicenter Personal is free and includes unlimited public and private projects with community forum support. Its zero end-user authentication and zero authenticated projects are decisive limits: it can serve experimentation or project development, but not a private authenticated learner rollout.

Epicenter Professional costs $1,970/year and includes 200 end-user authentication and five authenticated projects. It is the lower paid Epicenter tier for a bounded deployment. Epicenter Business costs $4,770/year and raises those allowances to 1,000 end-user authentication and 10 authenticated projects, making it the clearer fit for larger cohorts or multiple live simulations. Both trade the free plan's unrestricted project count for authenticated usage limits; the higher tier buys substantially more of that capacity.

Ready-Made Simulations start at $168 per seat, with annual licenses available for 100+ seats and immediate access to the team-based business simulation library. This is a simpler route than building in Epicenter, but the per-seat starting price and 100-seat threshold for annual licenses matter for buyers planning a large cohort.

Performer Business costs $7,200/year for 50 users, plus a one-time setup and training fee of $2,700. It fits a team that needs branded role-play and facilitation tools within that user cap; a larger deployment points to Performer Enterprise, which has custom pricing and includes 50+ users, unlimited client-developed content, additional content development, SSO integration, priority support, custom SLAs, and simulation advisors.

Epicenter Enterprise has custom pricing and covers 1,000+ end-user authentication, unlimited authenticated projects, custom SSO options, custom SLAs, and simulation advisors. Custom Simulations also has custom pricing: it is the route for a fully tailored simulation developed with Forio's team. Paid Epicenter tiers list enhanced forum, email, and phone support during office hours; Personal includes community forum support.

Platforms

Forio supports web, API, and self-hosted use. The self-hosting option is specifically for a project's user interface on a customer's own web server while the project continues to use Epicenter APIs, rather than a claim that the entire platform runs independently on customer infrastructure.

Who it's for

Forio identifies learning and development leaders, educators, and instructional designers as audiences for its simulation offerings. It is strongest for teams that value experiential practice, need multiplayer or instructor-led learning, or have the technical capacity to build and deploy their own simulations. Buyers seeking a straightforward packaged exercise can start with Ready-Made; teams needing proprietary scenario design can consider custom development. Organizations with very small learner groups should weigh Performer Business's 50-user minimum-scale tier and fee structure against their needs.

Pros and cons

Several ways to get a simulation. Ready-made content, a model-building platform, custom development, and role-play tools accommodate different levels of in-house capability.
Broad modeling and integration support. Python, R, Julia, Vensim, Stella, JavaScript libraries, REST APIs, and LLM connections give technical teams substantial room to work with existing models and services.
Deployment and facilitation options. Cloud or on-premises deployment, customer-hosted interfaces, multiplayer scenarios, and instructor dashboards serve varied learning setups.
The free plan is not a learner-facing authenticated tier. Zero end-user authentication and zero authenticated projects mean a team must pay to run those projects with authenticated learners.
Capacity and setup costs need planning. Epicenter's paid plans impose authentication and project caps, while Performer Business adds a $2,700 one-time fee to its annual price.
Some choices require a sales process. Enterprise and custom development use custom pricing, so buyers cannot compare those costs from the listed rates alone.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison of products in this category, see Business Simulation Software.

AnyLogic is worth considering for users who want a free personal learning edition and support across Linux, macOS, Windows, web, API, and self-hosted platforms.

GoVenture is another business simulation option.

The Business School offers a free teacher demo with no credit card, no PIN, and no licence, which may suit a buyer who wants to try a demo before a quoted MAT licence.

MonsoonSIM may suit education buyers who prefer a per-learner course subscription, with a listed USD 20 / learner / 6-month option and access for six or 12 months.

Cesim Business Simulations is another paid web-based option with a free trial.

CompanyGame is another paid option with a free plan and Android, iOS, and web support.

ExtendSim may be a better fit for buyers seeking a Windows or web option with a listed individual Analysis RunTime license at 495.00 USD per once, including the first year of Maintenance & Support Plan.

OrgSimulator is another freemium web option, with free professor access and student access charged per simulation run.

Verdict

Forio is a strong choice for educators and learning teams that want experiential business training and need to choose between ready-made content, their own model-driven simulations, and bespoke development. Epicenter's modeling range and deployment flexibility are its clearest advantages. Look elsewhere if you need an inexpensive authenticated rollout for a small group: the free plan cannot serve that use, and paid tiers bring capacity limits or custom pricing.
