Overview

ChaosBlade is a free, open-source chaos engineering project built around an experiment tool and the ChaosBlade-Box management platform. It is a strong fit for cloud-native teams that want to probe availability across infrastructure, applications and Kubernetes. Its breadth and flexible execution methods make it compelling; host installation of Box, however, comes with software prerequisites to plan for.

Key features

ChaosBlade covers faults affecting CPU, memory, network, disk, processes, kernels and files, alongside multilingual applications and Kubernetes resources. That range lets teams examine failure modes across several layers, rather than limiting drills to a single resource type. The ChaosBlade plan specifies support for 3 system platforms, 4 programming-language applications, 200+ experiment scenarios and 3,000+ parameters.

Experiments can be started from the CLI, using Kubernetes YAML and CRDs, through HTTP server calls, or from the ChaosBlade-Box interface. This choice is useful for teams with established command-line or Kubernetes workflows as well as those that want a shared interface. Box also automates deployment of experiment tools and hosts ChaosBlade and LitmusChaos. Helm supports deployment management, and Prometheus integration brings monitoring into the platform's integration picture.

Box offers manual stopping and automatic stopping after a configured timeout to help ensure drills are resumed. Those controls provide ways to end an experiment, but operators still need to set timeout policies appropriately. Experiment scheduling, blast-radius controls, Kubernetes support, and cloud and network fault injection round out the project’s capabilities.

Pricing

ChaosBlade costs 0.00 USD per free. The free, open-source plan includes the experiment tool, with the stated breadth of platforms, programming-language applications, scenarios and parameters; there are no paid tiers or seat, quota, or renewal terms attached to the plan. That makes it a practical starting point for teams able to operate the tool themselves, rather than buyers seeking a priced support or managed-service package.

Platforms

ChaosBlade supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows environments. The project can be installed as a CLI unpacked on a host, and the tool and platform also document Kubernetes installation with Helm. Host installation of the platform requires Java and MySQL; automatic probe installation additionally needs Ansible and expect. Those prerequisites matter for teams choosing that route, while Kubernetes installation offers a documented alternative.

Who it's for

ChaosBlade is aimed at enterprises seeking to improve system availability during cloud-native adoption. It suits teams that need varied fault scenarios and want multiple ways to launch experiments, particularly where Kubernetes is part of the environment. The project identifies as a Cloud Native Computing Foundation sandbox project and points users to Gitter, Twitter, Slack and a DingTalk community group for community contact.

Pros and cons

Broad experiment coverage: infrastructure resources, applications and Kubernetes resources give teams multiple system layers to examine.
Flexible execution: CLI, Kubernetes manifests and CRDs, HTTP calls and Box accommodate different operating workflows.
Free and open source: teams can use the tool without a subscription price.
Host deployment prerequisites: Box host installation depends on Java and MySQL, with Ansible and expect for automatic probe installation.
Operator responsibility remains: stop policies help end drills, but timeout configuration still needs care.

Alternatives

For a broader chaos engineering comparison, see Chaos Engineering Platforms.

Reliably may suit teams looking for an open-source approach that describes avoiding lock-in; its free plan is limited to 1 team member.
Chaos Toolkit is another free, open-source CLI option, offered under Apache License 2.0.
FaultMesh is worth considering for teams that want a freemium option with up to 3 services on its Starter plan, core fault types and basic resilience scoring.
Krkn is a free alternative whose opened pages state no pricing or usage limits.
Toxiproxy is a free, open-source TCP proxy under the MIT license, for readers seeking that narrower tool.
Chaos Mesh is a free, open-source cloud-native chaos engineering platform that runs on Kubernetes.
Gremlin is a paid option to consider if a 30-day trial without a credit card, which does not auto-convert, suits your evaluation.
Steadybit is a paid alternative with an Enterprise plan that includes on-prem installation, SAML, audit log and enterprise support.

Verdict

Choose ChaosBlade if your cloud-native team wants a free, open-source tool with broad experiment coverage and several execution paths, including Kubernetes workflows. Its main reason to choose is the combination of range and operational flexibility; look elsewhere if you want to avoid managing deployment prerequisites, especially for a host installation of Box.
