Overview

Consumers can create Photo Books, Wall Art, prints, posters, calendars, cards, and photo gifts using a browser designer, desktop software, or mobile apps. The Photo Portal is a separate gallery and shop system for photographers, combining image storage and sharing with sales and order management. Saal Digital was founded in 1981 and is headquartered in Röttenbach, Germany.

Key features

Design and print ordering

The online designer, free Windows and macOS desktop software, and Android and iOS apps offer several ways to build products. Automatic layouts can help arrange images, and Photo Books support up to 130 pages. That makes the service suitable for both straightforward photo gifts and longer albums, though its product-design tools are not a substitute for the photographer-focused sales features of the Portal.

Saal says its automated production process produces and ships premium photo products within 24 hours in most cases. That is a useful production-speed claim, not a promise of delivery within that timeframe.

Photo Portal

Portal combines galleries, project sales, configurable price lists, product sets, promotions, coupon codes, order management, and automated email workflows. Fulfillment, marketing automation, and analytics extend it beyond a basic gallery, giving photographers tools to handle sales as well as display images. Photo products sold through the Portal carry 0% commission; digital downloads incur a plan-dependent service fee, so photographers selling files should compare that rate with their expected revenue.

Portal data is hosted in Germany. Saal says stored images receive multiple encryption layers and data transmission uses SSL/TLS; its Portal pricing page also identifies GDPR and GPSR compliance among its security and privacy features. Payment methods include PayPal, credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and iDEAL | Wero, with availability depending on country. Product questions go through Customer Care, while complaints must be submitted through the Order Cockpit. Advanced image search and sales training and best practices are marked as coming soon, so they should not be counted on as current capabilities.

Pricing

Saal Digital has a free plan for Portal users and paid monthly subscriptions. All four plans charge 0% commission on photo-product sales; the difference is storage capacity and the fee on download revenue.

Plan	Price	Storage	Download commission
Free	0.00 USD per free	10 GB	12%
Saal Cloud	5.99 USD per month	200 GB	9%
Saal Prio	9.99 USD per month	1 TB	7%
Saal Prio Max	65.99 USD per month	5 TB	5%

Free is a sensible starting point for photographers with modest storage needs and limited download sales, but its 10 GB cap and 12% download commission make it less attractive as either grows. Saal Cloud raises storage to 200 GB and trims that fee to 9%, while Saal Prio offers 1 TB and a 7% rate for a larger archive or higher download volume. Saal Prio Max is aimed at substantial libraries: its 5 TB and 5% rate come at a much higher monthly price, so the lower commission matters most to sellers with enough download revenue to justify it. Paid plans are monthly at the stated prices.

For consumer products, Saal Digital is freemium, with paid products starting at $50 one-time. That purchase price is separate from the Portal subscriptions, and product costs are relevant to people ordering books, prints, or gifts rather than subscribing to sell photography.

Platforms

Saal Digital supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. The designer is available online, the desktop software runs on Windows and macOS, and mobile apps are available for Android and iOS. This is a broad device range for consumers; photographers can also use the web-based Photo Portal.

Who it's for

Saal Digital suits quality-oriented consumers, photo enthusiasts, businesses, and professional photographers. Consumers get several ways to design a wide range of physical products. Photographers who sell client work can use the Portal’s galleries and sales workflow, particularly when print-product sales are central and the 0% commission is valuable. It is a weaker fit for photographers whose business depends heavily on downloads unless their sales volume makes a paid plan’s lower commission worthwhile.

Pros and cons

Pros

Several design routes: Browser, desktop, and mobile options accommodate different devices, while automatic layouts can speed up arranging photos.
Broad product range: Books, wall art, prints, posters, calendars, cards, and gifts cover more than album production alone.
Portal print sales have no commission: Photographers can sell photo products without a percentage fee, and Portal includes order and promotion tools.
Choice of Portal tiers: Storage ranges from 10 GB to 5 TB, with download commissions falling from 12% to 5% as plans become more expensive.

Cons

Free Portal storage is capped at 10 GB: Photographers with larger galleries will need to accept that limit or pay for more capacity.
Download sales are charged a commission: The free plan takes 12%, and even the highest tier takes 5%, unlike photo-product sales at 0%.
Portal features are not all current: Advanced image search and sales training and best practices are marked as coming soon.
Complaints use a separate route: They must be submitted through the Order Cockpit rather than the Customer Care contact form used for product questions.

Verdict

Choose Saal Digital if you want a broad photo-product design and ordering service, or if your photography business needs galleries and sales tools with commission-free print-product sales. Its main advantage is that range, backed by multiple design platforms and a tiered Portal. Look elsewhere if you need more than 10 GB without a subscription, want to avoid commissions on downloads, or need the Portal’s coming-soon features today.
