Overview

ChordU turns song audio into synchronized chords and notation, and also lets users look up songs through YouTube links. It suits players who want several arrangements and instrument-specific chord diagrams alongside practice and export tools.

Its breadth is useful for moving from song lookup to practice materials, but local uploads and MusicOnly controls for uploaded files require Premium. The personal, non-commercial usage terms also rule it out for commercial work.

Key features

Chord recognition and song lookup

ChordU recognizes chords from audio files and synchronizes them into notation. For YouTube songs, the lookup process starts with a YouTube search: copy the song link and search for it in ChordU. Simplified, advanced, bass, and edited chord versions give players options for different levels of detail and parts.

That range is more useful than a single fixed chord view, particularly for players who want to compare arrangements. ChordU also includes a progression generator and voicing explorer, extending its use beyond looking up an existing song.

Notation, playback, and exports

ChordU supplies treble- and bass-clef note versions, including simple, music, and bass notes. Chord diagrams cover guitar, piano, ukulele, and mandolin, and chord audio playback connects the written material to sound. The website can export chord charts and provide PDF chord and note sheets, MIDI files, and synthesized notes in WAV format.

MusicOnly controls vocals, bass, drums, and instruments, and can export a mixed audio download. This gives users a way to work with a mix rather than only a chord chart, though use of MusicOnly for local uploads is reserved for Premium.

Privacy and support

ChordU says sensitive information is encrypted with SSL and that transactions go through a payment gateway rather than being stored on its servers. Users can request data deletion by email; processing takes up to seven days. Help documentation, sales, technical support, and media inquiries each have contact routes.

Pricing

Free costs 0.00 USD per free and provides limited access features. It is the sensible starting point for song lookup and trying the service, but it does not unlock the Premium-only local upload workflow or MusicOnly for uploaded files.

Starter has custom pricing. It includes paid features, but excludes song uploads and notes/MIDI downloads, so it is a poor fit for users whose workflow depends on those capabilities.

Premium costs 5.00 USD per month, billed $ 5.00/Month. It includes all ChordU features, uploads, MusicOnly mode, and downloads. Premium members can download chords without a stated monthly limit, making this the relevant plan for frequent downloading or upload-based work.

ChordU limits song and chord use to personal, non-commercial purposes under its terms. That restriction matters regardless of plan: paying for Premium does not make the material suitable for commercial use.

Platforms

ChordU runs on the web, Android, and iOS. Its website supports chord-chart export and offers PDF, MIDI, and WAV downloads; mobile apps broaden access beyond desktop use.

Who it's for

ChordU is a strong match for musicians who learn songs by comparing chord arrangements, need notation in more than one clef, or want diagrams for guitar, piano, ukulele, or mandolin. Its playback, progression, and voicing tools also suit players exploring harmony as well as following a song.

It is less suitable for anyone who needs commercial usage rights, or who wants local uploads and upload-based MusicOnly without Premium. Starter also misses song uploads and notes/MIDI downloads, so users needing those functions should consider Premium rather than assuming any paid tier includes them.

Pros and cons

Multiple chord and note views: simplified, advanced, bass, and edited chords plus treble- and bass-clef note options support different playing needs.
Useful instrument coverage: diagrams span guitar, piano, ukulele, and mandolin, with chord playback to complement the visual material.
Broad export mix: PDF sheets, MIDI, synthesized WAV notes, and chord-chart export serve different practice and arranging workflows.
Important upload restrictions: local files and MusicOnly for those uploads require Premium; Starter excludes uploads and notes/MIDI downloads.
Personal-use boundary: the non-commercial terms make ChordU unsuitable for commercial song or chord use.

Verdict

Choose ChordU if you want song-based chord recognition, several notation views, instrument diagrams, and a range of downloadable practice materials across web and mobile. Premium is the fit for local uploads and upload-based MusicOnly, while Starter's exclusions make it a narrower paid choice. Look elsewhere if you need commercial usage rights or unrestricted free uploads.
