Overview

The mod backs up worlds, not a broader set of server data. Full, partial, and differential backup types let operators vary what they capture, with separate schedules for each type and options to run backups at server start or stop. This flexibility suits servers with differing recovery needs, though operators must decide how those schedules and retention settings fit their storage capacity.

Before creating a backup, the mod checks destination free space and aborts unless it meets a threshold of twice the current world size plus the configured reserve. That safeguard can prevent a backup from starting with too little room, but the threshold is a real operational constraint to account for.

Key features

Scheduling and retention: Automatic schedules can be set by backup type, and retention can keep a configured number of each type. An optional total-size cap per world adds another way to manage disk use; neither control broadens the world-only backup scope.
Backup browser: Search and filter backups, then create, rename, delete, or restore them from the in-game browser. A restore is prepared asynchronously, but it is not applied immediately: the server shuts down and applies it safely on the next startup.
Configurable worker threads: World scanning, ZIP compression, and restore extraction can use multiple configured worker threads. This offers control over how those tasks are handled, but does not change the backup scope or restore sequence.
Mod Menu integration: The mod offers optional integration with Mod Menu.
Dedicated-server setup: Server settings must be changed in the server configuration file. The client config screen exposes only HUD and preview settings, so operators expecting to manage server behavior from that screen will need another workflow.

Pricing

Just Enough Backups is free: the Free, open-source mod plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There is no paid tier or trial to weigh against the included features. The project is licensed under the MIT License.

Platforms

The mod is for Minecraft Java Edition and is listed for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its backup scope is worlds only; scheduled backups are supported, storage destination is listed as both, restore granularity is full backup, and retention is custom.

Who it's for

Choose it if you operate a Fabric server and want configurable world backup types, scheduled runs, retention controls, and in-game backup management without a software charge. It is a less suitable fit if you need backups beyond worlds or want to configure dedicated-server settings through the client screen rather than editing a server configuration file.

Pros and cons

Pros

Full, partial, and differential backups with separate schedules let operators tailor capture routines.
The browser combines search and filtering with creation, renaming, deletion, and restoration.
Configurable retention counts and an optional per-world size cap help manage storage.
Free and open-source under the MIT License.

Cons

Backup scope is limited to worlds, not broader server data.
Dedicated-server settings require editing the server configuration file; the client screen covers only HUD and preview settings.
Restoration requires server shutdown and takes effect on the next startup.
Backup creation aborts unless destination free space meets twice the current world size plus the configured reserve.

Alternatives

For other Minecraft backup options, see Minecraft Backup Software. Consider InstantBackup if you want another free, open-source Minecraft server mod, or MineBackup if you want free software with no paid plans or usage limits stated. FastBack is another free Minecraft backup mod, distributed under GNU GPL version 2. FastBack is also a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Minecraft Backup is a free Linux server backup script. CaCl2Backup is a free MIT-licensed Fabric server mod requiring Minecraft 26.0+, Fabric Loader 0.15.0+, Fabric API, and Java 25+. Chronos Backups is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. FolderRewind is free and open source for Windows 10 / 11.

Verdict

Just Enough Backups is a sound choice for Fabric server operators who want more than a single backup routine and value in-game management without paying for a tool. Choose it for its backup-type scheduling and retention controls; look elsewhere if you need wider server coverage or cannot accommodate file-based configuration and a next-startup restore.
