Overview

Members appear on a live map refreshed every eight seconds, useful for checking arrivals and coordinating journeys. Joining happens through an invite link and requires the person's agreement, while visibility can be controlled for each circle. A privacy bubble can show a general neighbourhood rather than an exact address, giving teenagers and adults more control over precision.

Location data is end-to-end encrypted, is not sold or used for advertising, and can be exported or deleted in the app's settings. Adaptive GPS checks more often during movement and slows when a person is stationary, which should reduce needless battery activity. Gold history lasts 30 days before deletion, so CircleUs is not a long-term location archive.

Key features

Location, consent and alerts

Place alerts notify a circle when someone arrives at or leaves a chosen location. Three alerts on Free cover a few routine destinations; households tracking schools, workplaces and several relatives need Gold's unlimited alerts. Free also allows temporary sharing, real-time location, a privacy bubble, two circles and up to five members.

Emergency and driving tools

A one-tap SOS alerts circle members and can contact emergency services with live GPS coordinates. It is a meaningful fallback for family emergencies, although it does not replace a dedicated emergency service. Gold adds crash detection with 911 dispatch, plus drive reports covering speed, phone use, hard braking and a score after each trip. Those reports suit families coaching safer driving; they are unnecessary for users who only need occasional location sharing.

Elder care

Gold's elder-care mode learns daily routines, flags unusual inactivity, monitors battery status and sends check-in pings. That makes it relevant to caregivers who need a passive check on an older relative, while the requirement for the relative to consent remains central to the app's model. Gold also includes AI smart alerts and routines.

Pricing

Free Forever — free

The no-cost plan includes up to five members, two circles, three place alerts, real-time location, SOS, temporary sharing and the privacy bubble. It is the sensible starting point for a small household that can live with capped circles and alerts and does not need history, driving analysis or elder-care monitoring.

Gold — 9.00 USD per month

Gold is billed annually at $9 per month; the monthly price is $14. It adds unlimited members and alerts, crash detection with 911 dispatch, drive scores and safety reports, 30-day location history, elder-care monitoring, and AI smart alerts and routines. A seven-day trial gives households time to assess those extras. Cancellation is handled through the App Store or Google Play; access continues until the billing period ends, then the account returns to Free. Gold is the appropriate plan for larger families, frequent drivers and caregivers, but its annual billing commitment costs more upfront than the free tier.

Platforms

CircleUs runs on Android and iOS. A household using other device platforms will need those members to use a supported phone.

Who it's for

Choose CircleUs for families, teens and adults who want location sharing framed around consent and adjustable precision. It also fits drivers who value post-trip safety reporting and caregivers who need routine and inactivity signals for an older relative. It is a poor match for a large group unwilling to pay, because Free stops at five members, two circles and three alerts, or for anyone seeking permanent historical tracking.

Pros and cons

Pros

Consent and privacy controls: invitation-based joining, per-circle visibility and the privacy bubble reduce the pressure to reveal an exact address.
Broad safety coverage: SOS, live GPS emergency contact, driving reports and elder-care routines address more than simple map sharing.
Clear data protections: encryption, no advertising use or sale, and export or deletion controls give privacy-conscious families concrete safeguards.
Battery-aware tracking: adaptive GPS reduces checking when a person is stationary.

Cons

Free limits are tight: five members, two circles and three alerts can constrain growing households.
Key monitoring tools are paid: crash detection, history, driving analysis, elder care and unlimited capacity require Gold.
History is short-lived: even Gold deletes location history after 30 days.
Supported platforms are limited: Android and iOS only.

Alternatives

Browse Family Locator Apps for a wider category comparison. Pick Family Locator instead if you want complete functionality in its free version or a one-time $14.99 Lifetime plan, and need macOS support. Findmykids is the alternative when Android, iOS and web access matter and a lower-cost Básico or Cuidar tier suits your budget. Choose iSharing if one free place alert and seven-day history after watching an ad are sufficient. OtoZen is another Android/iOS freemium option. Hauk suits users who prefer a free, self-hosted Android, Linux and web service. OpenFamily is the free, AGPL-3.0 self-hosted choice with Android, iOS, API and web support. Be Closer offers free real-time location and a $3.99 monthly Premium tier. Glympse is worth considering when Android, iOS, web or API access and a technician-focused PRO plan are priorities.

Verdict

CircleUs is a strong choice for privacy-conscious families that want explicit consent, adjustable location precision and a serious SOS option in one app. Gold earns its price for larger circles, driving oversight and elder-care monitoring; smaller households should start with Free. Look elsewhere if you need desktop or web coverage, permanent history, or a generous no-cost member and alert allowance.
