In their own words
Clozemaster
Clozemaster is a language-learning service built around fill-in-the-blank sentences in context. Learners answer by selecting a choice or typing the missing word, then review sentences again through spaced practice and word-frequency progress tracking. The service lists 75 languages, thousands of sentences in more than 50 languages, and over 170 language pairings. It runs on the web, Android, and iOS, with personalized review and offline lessons. Some sentences have ChatGPT explanations by default, while others can generate an explanation when requested. Sentence and translation data comes from Tatoeba’s user-curated, CC-BY dataset, which may contain errors. The Free plan costs nothing and allows 30 sentences per day.
Lingora
Lingora is a language-learning service available on the web and through Android, iOS, and macOS apps. It offers courses in 21 languages, with 500 lessons per course progressing from zero to lower beginner. Lessons center on real sentences; the demo provides word meanings, transliteration, and pronunciation audio. Practice options include vocabulary games and quizzes, a step-by-step script trainer, grammar quizzes, tone quizzes for tonal languages, speech practice, personalized review, and an adaptive AI tutor. Offline lessons are also listed. Lingora has free services with limited or conditional access and advertising, as well as a free trial. Prices vary by course and access type: Cantonese A1 Premium is $4.99 a month, All Courses Premium is $12.99 a month, Cantonese A1 Pro is $14.99 a year, and Southern Vietnamese A1 Lifetime is 49.99 USD one-time. The maker is based in Hamburg, Germany, and its terms license the services for personal, non-commercial use. The AI tutor sends relevant chat history and recently studied material to Anthropic’s API; speech recordings go to Microsoft Azure for recognition.
