In their own words

Colima

Colima runs container environments on macOS and Linux, with Docker, containerd, Kubernetes and Incus runtime options. Docker compatibility is intended to let existing Docker workflows and tools continue without changes; containerd users can use nerdctl for a Docker-like command line. It can launch a local, single-node k3s cluster, and users can select an exact K3s version. CPU, memory and disk allocations are configurable, and multiple isolated instances can run with different settings. Colima also documents GPU-accelerated AI workloads on Apple Silicon using Krunkit, with model runners supporting Docker AI Registry and HuggingFace; Ramalama also supports Ollama registries. Those workloads require Apple Silicon, macOS 13 or newer, and Krunkit, with at least 8 GB of RAM recommended. The AI containers are isolated from the host filesystem, other containers and network access unless network access is enabled. Colima is free and MIT-licensed, with installation options for macOS and Linux. Incus virtual machines require m3 or newer Apple Silicon.

firecracker-containerd

firecracker-containerd lets containerd manage containers as Firecracker microVMs, adding isolation through the KVM hypervisor. Potential uses include sandboxing untrusted third-party containers and bin-packing different workloads on multi-tenant hosts. It uses OCI image format where possible. The project includes a control plugin and API, an out-of-process shim runtime, an agent inside the microVM, and a root filesystem image builder. That agent invokes runC through containerd-shim-runc-v1 to create Linux containers inside the microVM. Networking supports pre-created tap devices and tap devices created by CNI plugins such as bridge, ptp, host-local, firewall, and tc-redirect-tap. The software is free under Apache 2.0. Hosts require Linux 4.14 or later, Intel x86_64, and KVM; AMD and Arm are not supported. Building requires git, gcc, Docker CE, and Go 1.23 or later. The guide describes the project as very early, and multi-tenant use is at the user’s own risk.
