Overview

ColorKit spans palette creation, image-based color picking, gradient editing, contrast checking, and a collection of smaller utilities. That breadth makes it a useful place to move from visual reference to working colors, but it is less compelling for someone who needs only one specialized tool.

The image palette tool runs in a browser on phones, tablets, and computers. ColorKit says those images are never uploaded to its server, a meaningful advantage when extracting colors from personal or client work.

Key features

Palette generation and export

The generator offers AI prompts, style modes such as pastel, vivid, earthy, deep jewel, muted, neon ink, and mono tint, plus controls for hue, brightness, saturation, and temperature. Locking a color while regenerating the rest is useful when a brand or project already has an anchor color. Palette history helps with iteration; AI contrast and colorblind settings add support for checking combinations.

Palettes can be exported as PNG, copied as CSV or an array, or shared by URL. Palette and shade tools also export CSS variables, SCSS, JSON, and Tailwind config, making the tool relevant to both visual design and implementation. The range of output formats is a stronger fit for teams moving colors into code than a generator limited to image exports.

Image extraction

The image tool extracts between two and ten colors, lets users adjust color points manually, and can create a PNG collage. The bounded palette size keeps the result focused, though it may not suit work that needs a larger set of extracted colors. It is completely free and requires no signup; saving a palette for later does require a free account.

Gradients and other utilities

The gradient maker supports linear, radial, and conic gradients, adjustable stops, rotation, AI generation, CSS copying, and PNG or code export. Its limit of eight color stops should cover many design needs, but users building more complex transitions will need another workflow. Other listed tools include a color picker, gradient palette generator, shade generator, SVG color changer, background maker, and color mixer. The contrast checker calculates text and background ratios and can pick colors from an uploaded image or image URL.

Pricing

ColorKit has one plan: Free — free. It includes the color tools, while a free account enables saving palettes and gradients. There is no free trial because there is no paid plan described. The image palette tool works without an account, so casual extraction does not require registration; users who want saved work must accept that account step.

Platforms

ColorKit runs on the web. The image palette tool works in a browser on phones, tablets, and computers, so it can be used across those device types without a separate app.

Who it's for

ColorKit is a good fit for designers and artists who want a broad set of color tasks in one web toolkit, especially those who need to extract colors from images or pass palette values into code. It is less suited to users who require more than eight gradient stops or want a dedicated workflow rather than a collection of tools.

Pros and cons

Broad workflow coverage: palette generation, image extraction, gradients, contrast checking, and smaller utilities share one toolkit.
Useful handoff formats: palette exports include common developer formats such as SCSS, JSON, and Tailwind config, alongside PNG, CSV, arrays, and shareable URLs.
Private-by-design image handling: ColorKit says image palette inputs are never uploaded to its server, and the tool works without an account.
Saving requires registration: palettes and gradients can be saved only with a free account, which adds a step for users who want to keep their work.
Gradient complexity is capped: eight stops may constrain users creating more elaborate transitions.

Alternatives

For a broader directory of options, see Color Palette Generators. Choose Pantone Connect Palette Generator instead if you want access to its 15,000-plus-color library and Search, Pick, and Measure tools across web, mobile, and browser extension platforms. ColorDesigner is another web and extension option, with 12 free tools and caps on saved colors, palettes, and projects in its free plan.

Atmos is an alternative with a lifetime plan at a one-time payment. If you want a free web tool with unlimited generations, exports, shareable links, and an API without an account, consider Color Palette Generator AI. Grabient is a free alternative for documented API reads, with no API key or signup and a rate limit of 300 requests per 10 seconds per IP.

Colora is a free, open-source Windows option under the BSD 3-Clause license. For free web-based accessibility checks without paywalls, consider Colorfool; for palette and recolor tools that work in-browser without an account, consider Paletto Studio.

Verdict

Choose ColorKit if you want a free, broad web toolkit that connects palette exploration with image extraction, gradient work, and code-ready exports. Its no-signup image tool and stated image privacy are especially useful. Look elsewhere if you need a more specialized product, more than eight gradient stops, or a saved-work flow without an account.
