Overview

Contour combines GPU-accelerated rendering with keyboard-oriented controls and sessions that can outlast a terminal window. That makes it more appealing for sustained shell work than for someone who needs only a basic command prompt. Split panes, SSH support, and a scripting API add room to shape a workflow, while its Apache License 2.0 makes the software free to use.

Its broad desktop support is useful for users moving between operating systems. Installation options include Windows MSI, Homebrew on macOS, Fedora, Arch, and Ubuntu packages, Flatpak, and source builds. The project’s website is still in draft mode, so users seeking polished product guidance may find the surrounding experience less settled than the feature set.

Key features

Rendering and text

GPU rendering and high-DPI support suit modern displays. Font ligatures, Unicode grapheme clusters, and complex emoji support help preserve the intended appearance of programming text and symbols. Inline Sixel images and clickable hyperlinks extend the terminal beyond ordinary text output; OSC 52 clipboard support can set the clipboard from within a terminal session.

Sessions and navigation

Persistent sessions can survive the terminal window and be reattached locally or over a network, a meaningful advantage for work that should continue after the visible window closes. Contour also offers vi-like navigation, selection, and copying, plus vertical markers for jumping through command history. Profiles group color schemes, login shells, and related behavior, giving users a way to keep distinct environments organized.

Remote access and tmux

Contour’s TCP endpoint always uses TLS, and TCP connections require a token or token file. That is a useful security baseline for remote sessions, though it means there is no plaintext mode. tmux control mode works in both directions, but Contour does not support -CC; workflows that require that variant will need another terminal. Images drawn before attaching through tmux cannot be recovered, since tmux capture-pane preserves text and color rather than image data.

Daemon mode is experimental, and its command-line flags and wire protocol may change between releases. Users building dependable automation or long-lived integrations around the daemon should treat that instability as a real cost. Contour supports host-programmable and indicator statuslines, but its strongest case remains interactive terminal work rather than reliance on an evolving daemon interface.

Pricing

Contour — 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the only stated plan, with no paid tier to compare. That makes it a straightforward choice for individuals and teams wanting a capable terminal without a software charge; there are no stated seat limits, usage quotas, trial period, or renewal terms.

Platforms

Contour runs on Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Windows. This range suits users who want a consistent terminal option across desktop systems, though the specific installation routes differ: Windows MSI, Homebrew on macOS, Linux distribution packages, Flatpak, and source builds.

Who it's for

Contour is best for experienced shell users who value modal navigation, persistent sessions, Unicode-aware text rendering, and control over terminal profiles. It is less suitable for users whose workflow depends on tmux -CC, recoverable tmux-rendered images, or a stable daemon contract. Users who prefer fully polished project guidance may also find the draft-mode website a drawback.

Pros and cons

Pros: Persistent sessions can be reattached locally or over a network, which helps keep long-running work accessible beyond a window’s lifetime.
Pros: GPU rendering, high-DPI support, ligatures, and complex Unicode handling serve users with demanding display and text needs.
Pros: TLS and mandatory tokens protect TCP connections, rather than allowing unencrypted remote access.
Cons: Lack of tmux -CC support rules it out for workflows that require that control-mode variant.
Cons: Images rendered before attaching through tmux cannot be restored, limiting image-heavy sessions across that boundary.
Cons: Experimental daemon behavior may change, making it a weak foundation for integrations that need a stable interface.

Alternatives

Termalin is worth considering for users who want a freemium terminal with a free plan, session recording and replay, a local encrypted vault, SSH and SFTP, and broad platform coverage including web and iOS. Warp offers a free monthly plan with core terminal features and Warp Agent CLI access for developers, and may suit readers who specifically want that combination. gitsome is another free option for users seeking an open-source CLI.

Tabby is a free, FOSS alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows. WezTerm is also free and open source, with pre-built releases or source builds. Hyper and Konsole are free terminal alternatives for Linux, macOS, and Windows. MobaXterm is a Windows-only freemium option; its Home Edition has stated session, SSH tunnel, macro, and service-time limits, while its Professional Edition costs 69.00 USD per year.

Verdict

Choose Contour if you want a free, cross-platform terminal built around responsive rendering, persistent sessions, and precise keyboard navigation. Its security-conscious remote access and broad text support strengthen the case. Look elsewhere if tmux -CC compatibility or a stable daemon is essential to your work.
