Overview

XnConvert is desktop software for converting and editing image batches, particularly useful when the same work needs to be repeated across a photo collection. Its broad format support and automation suit people with recurring image workflows better than those who only need to convert a file now and then.

More than 80 operations cover metadata, transformations, adjustments, filters and effects, while support for more than 500 formats and export to about 70 formats make it practical for handling mixed collections. That breadth is a strength, but users looking for a narrow, one-step resizing tool may not need its wider workflow.

Key features

Batch editing and conversion: XnConvert can process RAW images, resize and rename batches, and apply quality controls. Its output formats include JPEG, TIFF, PNG and WebP.
Repeatable automation: Saved presets let users reuse an edit sequence on later batches. Watched folders can automatically apply a custom set of edits to new or updated images, making the software a strong fit for ongoing intake workflows.
Image review tools: Color management, a metadata viewer, side-by-side comparison and contact sheets support inspection as well as editing.
Flexible workflow: The interface supports drag and drop, and XnConvert can export to NConvert for command-line use. More than 20 translations broaden its accessibility.

The XnConvert forum is recommended for discussion with users and the developer. Download checksums are provided as SHA-256, a useful integrity check for downloaded files.

Pricing

XnConvert is freeware for private, educational and non-profit use, with the free plan priced at 0.00 EUR per free. Company use requires a license, purchased once per license rather than through a recurring subscription:

Company licenses	Price per license
1 license	15.00 EUR per once
2–9 licenses	13.50 EUR per once
10–19 licenses	12.00 EUR per once
20–49 licenses	10.50 EUR per once
50–99 licenses	9.00 EUR per once
100+ licenses	6.50 EUR per once

The lower per-license rates apply only when buying larger groups of licenses. The free-use terms make XnConvert an accessible option for individual, educational and non-profit workflows, but businesses must budget for a license for each seat. There is no free trial.

Platforms

XnConvert runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. That cross-platform availability helps teams or individuals use the same batch-oriented approach across the three desktop systems.

Who it's for

XnConvert is a good match for photographers, organizations and other users who regularly process varied image collections and want to reuse edits or automate incoming files. Its RAW support, format range and batch tools give it a wider role than basic conversion. It is less compelling for someone who only resizes a few images occasionally, and company users need to account for per-license costs.

Pros and cons

Pro: Support for more than 500 formats and export to about 70 can simplify work with mixed image libraries.
Pro: Presets and watched-folder automation reduce repeated setup for recurring batches.
Pro: RAW processing, bulk renaming and resizing, comparison and contact sheets combine editing and review tools in one workflow.
Con: Company use requires paid licenses, with per-license pricing that declines only at larger seat counts.
Con: Its extensive batch toolkit may be unnecessary overhead for one-off or simple conversion tasks.

Alternatives

Batch Photo Processing Software is a useful starting point for comparing tools centered on batch workflows. For resizing specifically, browse Photo Resizing Software; for format conversion, see Image Converter Software or the broader File Conversion Software. Readers looking for browsing tools can compare Photo Viewer Software and File Viewer Software.

Choose Converseen if you prefer free software under GNU GPL version 3; it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. PixelMod is another freemium alternative, with Windows, macOS and web platforms and a free tier that caps web downloads at five per month and images at 0.5 MP, while allowing unlimited desktop downloads. Fotosizer is a Windows-only option with a free Standard Edition and a Personal license priced at 11.10 USD per once for up to one computer with a lifetime license.

PDFOptim, ON1 Portrait AI, Desqueeze, Batch Resize and Photo Size Optimizer are also alternatives to consider.

Verdict

Choose XnConvert if you need a cross-platform way to edit and convert image batches repeatedly, especially when presets or watched folders can remove manual steps. Its format breadth and automation are the main reasons to choose it; occasional users and businesses unwilling to pay per seat should look elsewhere.
